James B Brown September 10, 1965 – May 08, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook James Bernard Brown was the oldest of six children born to Lucille Parker and John Berg on September 10, 1965 in Selma, Alabama. James peacefully entered his eternal rest on May 8, 2019 in New York City. He was preceded in death by his father, John Berg, and sister, Erica.

James was well known for being stubborn, feisty and knowing everything, but he had a heart of gold. This trait may have come from being born in Selma when Martin Luther King was planning his march from Selma to Montgomery. James would argue you down if he felt he was right about something and would keep that opinion even after learning he was wrong.

Even when the doctors would tell him his time was short, he would start to tell them what services he would be eligible for through Medicare in another year. He was a fighter to the end and had a lot of determination. However his body would not go along with what he had in his mind.

Due to illness, James was forced to retire early from his beloved job. He worked for the NYC Administration for Children’s Services as a Community Assistant and often boasted that he worked for the “Commissioner”. You would have thought he was running the place the way he talked.

He was well-known and liked there. He would call staff demanding what documentation he needed during his sickness, and if they didn’t move fast enough to his liking, he would call them until he got what he wanted. If you had an occasion to visit his work site and said you were here about James Brown, they would say here’s my number tell him to call me to let me know how he’s doing.

His memory will remain with his loving mother, Lucille, and his four brothers, Carl, George, Byron and Damion. He had a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly. Many of them referred to him as dad because of his generous heart.

He was even a great uncle. Also, left to mourn him are many cousins and friends, too numerous to name.
