Obituary for James M. Bevers James Merwyn Bevers, 90, of Evansville, Indiana passed away Friday, September 7, 2018. Jim was born February 17, 1928 in New Albany, Indiana and spent the first nine years of his life growing up in West Baden, Indiana. Following his father’s death in 1937, Jim and mother Gladys relocated to Dillsboro, Indiana, and in 1938 to Mt.
Vernon, Indiana where Gladys taught Art at Mt. Vernon High School. In 1945 Gladys and Jim relocated to Evansville where his mother taught Art at Central High School and Jim spent his senior year.
Following graduation from Central in 1946 Jim attended Evansville College. In 1946 Jim met his future wife, Mary Louise Parrish, at band camp. In 1949, they were married on Jim’s 21st birthday.
They settled on the Westside and raised a family. Jim worked for Sears Roebuck and Company for 38 years, and Kuesters Hardware for 16 years before retirement. Jim also proudly served in the Indiana National Guard for five years and the United States Army during 1953-1955.
Jim enjoyed several hobbies over the years and was an avid University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball fan. He loved Bluegrass, Tejano, and classic country music. The family enjoyed traveling in campers coast-to-coast in 48 states plus Mexico and Canada.
He and Mary Lou were members of the NCHA Chigger Diggers Camping Club for over 50 years. Jim’s other memberships included: First Baptist Church, Lessing Lodge #464 F & AM, Scottish Rite, York Rite, and the Swords of Bunker Hill. Jim was also a Kentucky Colonel Following Mary Lou’s death in September 2016, he moved to Oasis Dementia Care where he spent his remaining days.
The family would like to thank the staff at Oasis and the medical staff at Deaconess Gateway ICU for the care of their father. Jim is survived by three sons: David (Candace), Mike (Joan), and Dan (Heather). He had six grandchildren: Chad, Casey, Kelsey, Matthew, Karen, and Isaac, and three great-grandchildren: Landyn, Kayleigh, and Elijah.
Visitation will be Sunday, September 9, 2018 from 2-5 PM at Pierre Funeral Home. Services will be Monday, September 10, 2018 at 10:00 AM with visitation 9-10 AM Pastor Jim Freese will be officiating. Lessing Masonic Lodge # 464 will have a masonic service at 4:00 PM Sunday at the Funeral Home.
