James Dale Shields, 85, of Dry Fork, Va. , went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at Roman Eagle Rehab and Healthcare Center. He was born December 1, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, Va.

to the late Eva Mills Shields and the late James F. Shields. He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth “Beth” Shields. Mr. Shields proudly served his country with the US Army in Korea.

He was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church. Mr. Shields worked his whole life as a tobacco… Read More » farmer; he loved farming. He also loved to hunt and listen to his dogs run.

Mr. Shields was a great softball pitcher back in the days of men’s fast pitch. He coached the ‘Rookies” girl’s slow pitch softball team for years, in which his daughter and niece played for him. Mr. Shields was said to be one of the great softball coaches; his team won many titles up and down the east coast.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Robin Shields of Dry Fork; his son, Randy Shields of Colfax, N.C.; and his brother, Edwin Shields. In addition to his parents, Mr. Shields was predeceased by his brothers, Richard Shields and Curtis Shields. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Lisa Chaney who helped take care of Mr. Shields.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Oakland United Methodist Church, Blairs, Va. , with Rev. Jon Woodburn officiating.

Interment will follow at Oakland UMC Cemetery. At other times the family will receive friends at the residence. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice.
