James’ Obituary James G. Howard, 92, died May 26, 2019. He was born in Plano, Texas on May 28, 1926 to Dorothy Gray Mills Howard and Major James G. L. Howard U.S. Army Engrs. He attended schools in Texas, New York, and New Jersey and universities in Maryland and Columbia U. in NYC.

He held memberships in Kappa Delta Pi and Mensa. He was preceded in death by both of his wives: Verna Ruth Robinson, 1949-58, and Sarah Elizabeth Strader Anders 1967-2011. When he and Sarah married, her sons Jimmy, Billy, and Teddy were 6, 5, and 2, and his son, Sid was 15.

Together they raised and helped educate all of them. He taught English and math in grades 7-12 in Maryland, New Jersey, and Fairfax Co. Virginia for 35 years. He served in the Navy 1944-46 as a radar operator and helmsman.

He found the Harrisonburg Unitarian Universalist Church helpful and congenial when he and Sarah moved into VMRC in 2010. Today this family includes 22: sons, partners/spouses, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Surviving are: Sidney Gordon Howard and wife, Betsy, James A. Anders and his partner and spouse, Kemp Williams, William Strader Anders and wife, Lori, Colonel Richard Edward Anders USMC Ret.

and wife, Donna and their children, their children’s spouses, and great-grandchildren.
