Obituary for James William Davis James William (JW) Davis, age 84, of Surgoinsville, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2018. He is preceded in death by his parents, W.P. and Laura Wallen Davis; nephews, Mark Aaron Brown, Randall Gregory Brown and Sam Davis II; and good friend, Henry Derrick, all of Surgoinsville. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Ellen LeRoy Davis; daughter, Pamela Davis Grimes of Crawfordville, FL; son, Billy Joe Davis (Gina) of Surgoinsville; grandson, William Ivy Davis (Haley) of St. Marks, FL; sister, Inez Davis Brown (Harry), and brother, Sam Davis (Joann), both of Surgoinsville; and many nieces and nephews.

JW was born September 27, 1933, in Surgoinsville. He graduated from Rogersville High School in 1952 and served in the United States Navy from 1952-1956 aboard the USS Stribling. He joined the Kingsport Press in 1956.

In 1963, the family moved to Tallahassee, FL, where he worked with Rose Printing Company and St. Petersburg Printing Company. He joined the Tallahassee Democrat in 1970 (retiring in 2002) where he worked with special friends, Ernie Commander, Doris Dunlap, Danny Farr, Rick Johnson, Tony Moyer, Mike Pate, Dawn Reichert and many others. After retirement, JW and Mary returned to the Davis family home in Surgoinsville.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm till 7:00 pm on Friday, September 21, 2018 at Christian-Sells Funeral Home in Rogersville. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 pm with Rev. Bryan Thurman officiating.

Military graveside services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday at the Davis Family and Friends Cemetery with military funeral honors rendered by the Hawkins County Color Guard and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Online condolences may be made at www. christiansells.com.
