Jay was born May 5, 1928, the son of Jay and Mabel (Johnson) Springsted, in Velva, ND. He attended school in Velva before graduating as Class Vice President from Drake High School in 1947.

Jay worked at the Drake Creamery after high school before enlisting in the United States Army on August 28, 1948. He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He worked as an Enlister in Wahpeton, ND, where he met his future wife, Connie.

He also spent time stationed in Kansas and was stationed in Hawaii when it became a state. Jay spent 151 months stationed overseas in Germany and Italy. His daughter, Vanessa, was born in Munich, Germany while being stationed there in 1966.

He was honorably discharged after retiring from 21 years of proud service. Jay married Connie Provolt on June 23, 1964. They made their home in Minot after Jay’s military retirement in 1973.

There, Jay worked as a supervisor at MonDak Chemical and also as a courier for Purolater Courier until his retirement from civilian work. Connie passed away January 10, 2014. Jay moved to Brookdale Brentmoor of Minot in 2015 and to Souris Valley Care Center of Velva in July of 2018.

Jay was a member of the VFW, American Legion, DAV and the Moose Club. Jay was a loving father and grandfather. He had a notorious sweet tooth that he shared with both his granddaughters, Brooke and Jordan.

He was always more than willing to make a stop after picking them up from school to get some ice cream from the Dairy Queen, or a treat at the Doughnut Hole. At the end of their visit he would always end it with, “See ya later alligator” where they would both reply, “After a while crocodile”. He had pride in his home town of Drake, attending the Drake Threshing Show for 40 years.

He spent his days going for coffee at Charlie’s Café, going to Brooke and Jordan’s school and sporting events, and watching Minot State Athletics. He enjoyed telling stories of his childhood and his time serving in the Army. He always jumped at the chance to be a gentleman and opening doors for women.

When they would thank him, he would always respond with, “Thank you for letting me be a gentleman”. He would even go to his daughter Vanessa’s work and start her car and brush off all of the snow in the winter before she would get off work. In the last year of his life, he was able to meet his first great-grandson Case, who was his favorite visitor.
