Joel’s Obituary Joel Barlow Marsden, affectionately known as Mr. Joel, Dad, and Pops, passed away peacefully on New Year’s Day 2019 at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough. A gentle soul with kind eyes and a tender heart, Joel was a passionate lover of all things baseball and a fiercely loyal and devoted spouse, father, grandfather and friend. With a zest for life restrained only by physical limitations in later years, Joel loved good music, dancing, great food, volunteering for the Beach to Beacon, serving his church, body surfing at Scarborough Beach, and spending time with his family and friends.

Joel was a fixture at Hadlock field and popular with players and fans. He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, but a Cape Elizabeth native at heart and lived within steps of Portland Head Light for most of his life. He’s a 1958 graduate of Cape Elizabeth High School and earned his bachelor’s degree in 1972 from UMPG while working full time and raising a family.

Joel is preceded in death by his parents William Hoyt Marsden and Ruth (Barlow) Marsden, his twin brother John Hoyt, and his older sister Anne Beverly. He is survived by his steadfast wife and best friend Nancy; daughter Kimberly Jo Stiver and husband John; son Kevin McCarthy Marsden, wife Amanda, and grandson Nolan Barlow Marsden. Of all Joel’s joys, his greatest happiness came from his family and most recently the special connection with his grandson.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church (280 Ocean House Rd. , Cape Elizabeth, ME 04107) or Northern Light Healthcare and Hospice (PO Box 931 Bangor, ME 04402, include “hospice only” in the check memo). Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Friday, January 4, 2019 at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.

The Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 pm, Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church.
