Richard’s Obituary Richard S. White (78) of South Portland passed away at Maine Medical Center on January 3, 2019. Richard was born in Winchester, MA to the late Philip and Martha (Sanborn) White on December 13, 1940. Richard grew up in Reading, MA before moving in Maine following the death of his parents, where he spent many years volunteering for Portland High School before retiring in 1996.

While you could often find Richard helping out around the house, he most enjoyed spending time with his family any chance he could. His favorite past times were spent outside with his nieces and nephews giving tractor rides, playing ball or swimming in Hancock Pond. He also firmly believed that a meal was not over until he finished his dessert.

Richard was a true light in this world. There wasn’t a person who met Richard that didn’t walk away smiling. He was kind-hearted and had an infectious smile.

He always was the life of the party and his laughter could be heard from anywhere. He was a true fixture in his family and will be missed by many. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by his sister Elizabeth Hodges and brother Philip White Jr. Richard is survived by his sisters Mary Burns of South Portland, ME and Martha Chambers of Athens, GA; his niece and caregiver Martha Spencer and her children Paul Spencer, Mary Rowan and her Husband Aron, Amanda Boudreau and her husband Joseph and their daughters Nora and Chloe, and Sarah Spencer; and many nieces and nephews.

Richard’s family would like to thank the staff at Birchwoods at Canco for their exceptional care and patience showed to him. He enjoyed his time there and truly thought of them as an extension of his family. Family and friends are invited to visiting hours from 10:00 – 11:00 AM on Monday January 7, 2019 at Hobbs Funeral Home 230 Cottage Road South Portland.

A funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 AM at the funeral home.
