CASTLEWOOD, VIRGINIA – John B. Stewart, Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, March 24, 2019. John was the son of the late Mary Lou Kelch and John B. Stewart, Sr of St. Paul, VA. He was preceded in death by his only son, D. Michael Stewart; one granddaughter, Abbi Gayle Osborne; grandson-in-law, Jackie Austin; and one brother, William D. (Bill) Stewart.
He attended St Paul High School and was a member of the 1952 class. He was a Godly man and loved the Lord and his church family. He served as Sunday School Superintendent for St. Paul Assembly of God, where he taught Sunday School, Royal Rangers, and served as a Deacon.
He was an active member of First Assembly of God in Abingdon, Virginia up until his death where he served as a Deacon. His most proud accomplishment was the renovation and addition to St. Paul Assembly of God building. He was a former employee of Clinchfield Coal Company and then owned Stewart Construction in the late 1970’s and 1980’s.
He worked for Cumberland Res and Black Mountain Res. He was an avid fisherman, spending his spare time on the lake with his brothers, Bill and Steve, grandsons, Patrick, Jett, and Garrett, his daughter, Kellee’, and granddaughters, Beth and Andee’. He loved gardening and taking care of his chickens with his grandsons, Parker and Jett.
After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with the love of his life, his wife, Nell. They would celebrate their 67th wedding anniversary on March 27, 2019. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Nell; two daughters, Deena and husband, Jim Osborne of Coeburn, Virginia, their children, Beth, Heidi, and husband, Robbie, and John Thomas and wife, Becky; their grandchildren, Faith, Jett, Mikayla, Tyler, Samantha, Gabby, Shane, Eli, and Samuel; their great-grandchildren, Baby Clyde and Baby Lane; daughter, Kellee’ of Castlewood, Virginia, her children, Patrick and wife, Ashley, Parker, Garrett and wife, Beth; and daughter, Andee’, her granddaughter, Aria Evelynn and new grandbaby arriving September 2019; one daughter-in-law (Mike’s wife), Debbie of St. Paul, Virginia, their children, Jennifer and husband, Bill, Ali Schae, and Dale, their grandchildren, Christian, McKinley, Lillian, Aiden, Owen, Noah, Kimmie, and great-granddaughter, Shaylyn; his brother, Steve and wife, Kay of St. Paul, Virginia; two sisters, Shirley and Olaf Kennedy of Castlewood, Virginia and Norma and Harry Jarrett of Moneta, Virginia; special sisters-in-law, Jean Hall of Castlewood, Virginia, Brenda and husband, Bob Jacobs of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Peggy Stewart of Castlewood, Virginia, and Darlene Glover of San Antonio, Texas; he left behind a host of family, friends, nieces and nephews; special friends, Rev.
Roger Williams and wife, Wanda, Roy Mullins, Gale Kiser, and Roger Howard. Lawrence Hollyfield officiating. Committal Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 28, 2019 in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Virginia. Family and Friends will meet at the funeral home and go in procession to the cemetery leaving at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
Grandsons: Patrick Fields, Parker Fields, Garrett Patton, Jett Wilson, John Osborne, and Robbie Perrigan will lay their Granddad to rest at Temple Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2019 in Castlewood Funeral Home, Castlewood, Virginia.
