Obituary for Lorna Keeling Lorna M. Keeling passed away April 11, 2018 at the age of 87. She was born March 22, 1931 on a family farm just outside St. Albans on Dry Ridge Road. Growing up Lorna attended school in St. Albans but later moved to Putnam County and graduated from Hurricane High School in 1949.
There she also met Charles “Charlie” Keeling and they married that same year on September 12. Their sons Charles “Skip” Keeling and Phillip Keeling were born in 1951 and 1954. Daughter Sandra Keeling was born in 1967.
Charlie, along with his and Lorna’s brothers, built the family home on Teays Valley Road in 1957; the couple resided there together until 2018. In early adulthood Lorna enjoyed working as a florist at a greenhouse owned by her parents in Teays Valley and her aunt’s flower shop in Alum Creek. A building trades electrician, Charlie frequently traveled for work.
Lorna managed the household, grew large gardens, canned food, etc. Growing up on a farm during the Great Depression molded her into someone who could navigate well the challenges of life. Her father Tolbert Kirk was an Englishman who immigrated to America in the 1920s.
He married Ruth Halstead and they had three kids: Jack, Tennyson and Lorna. When she was an infant Tolbert returned to England. The large Halstead family provided support during her upbringing.
She offered her children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren much joy and happiness. Her home was a place they all enjoyed, as she was a kind, loving and witty woman. Lorna is survived by her husband Charles, son Phillip Keeling (Jo Ann Carlson), grandchildren Jason Keeling, Adam Keeling, Misty Keeling, Cory Thomas, Ryan Thomas and two great grandchildren, Hannah Keeling and Haiden Stewart.
She is preceded in death by her parents, daughter Sandra Thomas, son Charles “Skip” Keeling and brothers Jack and Tennyson Kirk. A Memorial service to celebrate Lorna’s life will be held at 2:00pm Saturday June 16, 2018 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
