Madalee’s Obituary Madalee (Mattie) Bernell Woods, 91, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at her residence in Jay, OK. She was born on March 15, 1928 in Sycamore, OK to John Rosell and Lyda Ellen Potter-Rosell. Mattie graduated from Jay High School, Class of 1946.
She married Gordan A. Woods on February 4, 1946. After working as clerk and waitress at various local businesses Mattie and her husband, Gordan, bought and opened Woods Groceries in August 1961. They worked 14 hours a day/7 days a week.
They always tried to have huckleberries ready to purchase at their store during the Jay Huckleberry Festival as well as having dried hominy. Woods Store was also known for their sliced Bologna Meat and during the holiday’s selling hominy to their customers. Mattie would help the community by giving families that were in need of groceries from her store and being a legal guardian to help also assist ones in need.
In 2013, Mattie retired and closed Woods Grocery and continued on with her retirement and family role model, as a loveable mom, grandma, and friend which you always knew where you stood with her. She was known, to all who knew her, as a collector. She would collect and cherish family memorabilia over the years and would share stories about each precious collectable cherished item.
Mattie loved being at the family gatherings, enjoying time with her family and especially with her grandchildren. She was a member of Faith Mission Church of Jay, OK and was very proud to be their Angel in the Annual Christmas Play. Mattie is preceded in death by her parents, John and Lyda Rosell; husband, Gordan A. Woods and brother, Loyd Rosell.
She is survived by her son, Gordan E. (Gene) Woods and wife Linda of Jay, OK; granddaughter, Angie Lynn Woods-Childress and significant other Eric Cooper of Jay, OK; great-granddaughter, Audrey Lynn Childress and significant other John Downs of Jay, OK; great-great-granddaughter, Jazlynn Dawn Childress of Jay, OK; sister, Wanda Jolene Herring of Jay, OK; nieces, Kim Spence of Jay, OK, Martha Magee of Catoosa, OK, Elaine Winfield of Jay, OK and Darlene Stapleton of Jay, OK; nephews, Junior Herring of Jay, OK, Dusty Herring of Jay, OK, Mike Rosell of Rockwall, TX, John Rosell of Claremore, OK, Dee Rosell of Tulsa, OK, Paul Woods of Jay, OK and Tom Woods of AR; many cousins, extended family and friends. Mattie’s family visitation to greet friends will be held on Friday, March 22, 2019 from 5:00-7:00pm at Lawson’s Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, 311 W. Gray St., Jay, OK 74346. Mattie’s Celebration Of Life Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, 2:00pm, March 23, 2019 at Faith Mission Church, 501 S. 7th St., Jay, OK with Chester Crittenden officiating.
Burial will be at Duffield Cemetery, Jay, OK. Arrangements are entrusted to Lawson’s Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, 311 W. Gray St., Jay, OK 74346 with Shaunda J. Lawson, 3rd Generation Owner/Funeral Director and Staff.
