Mary’s Obituary Mary Beth Egesdal, age 80 of Gaylord died Sunday, January 20, 2019 at the Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the American Lutheran Church in Gaylord. Pastor Paul Kratzke will officiate, and burial will take place in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Hanska at a later date.
Visitation will be from 2-7 pm on Friday, January 25th and continue from 9-11 am on Saturday, January 26th at the American Lutheran Church in Gaylord. The Minnesota Valley Funeral Homes of New Ulm are handling arrangements. To leave an online condolence for her family, or to sign the guestbook, go to: mvfh.org Mary Beth is survived by her daughter, Ruth (Frank) Nicolosi of Rockford, Illinois; her sons, John Egesdal of Wauconda, Illinois, Dave Egesdal of Brooklyn Park, Tom Egesdal of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Jim Egesdal of Gaylord; her grandchildren, Julia, Carter and Claire, Jackson and Lucas, Timothy and Kimberly; and her sisters, Pamela (Bob) Schultz of Rosemont, Priscilla (Jeff) London of Plymouth, Debra (Paul) Christenson of Omaha, Nebraska; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers, George, Marcus, Jon, and Timothy Schmiesing. Mary Elizabeth Schmiesing was born March 2, 1938 in Hanska to Floyd and Nina (Sorheim) Schmiesing. She attended country grade school at ISD 67 and was a graduate from the New Ulm Public High School in the class of 1956.
To further her education, Mary graduated from the Lutheran Bible Institute in 1958, and later attained her CNA credentials from the Hutchinson Vocational Collage. Early in her career, Mary worked as a parish worker in White Bear Lake as well as at the University of Minnesota in Administration. She proudly raised her family and worked from her home in Gaylord for many years.
Once the children were raised, Mary went into the nursing field where she worked for over 20 years as a CNA at the Lakeview Terrace Nursing Home, as well as in Home Health, and at the Arlington Hospital. Besides her work there were a variety of hobbies, clubs, and volunteer organizations that brought her great joy in life. She loved to work with her hands and enjoyed sharing her artistic abilities.
Mary also loved to share her gifts of quilting and sewing with family, friends, and neighbors. Her personalized hand written cards and stationary she would send will always be remembered as well. She truly lived her life with a spirit of giving.
Countless hours were spent volunteering around her community as well as at Lakeview Terrace where she would help the residents even in her retirement. Many cherished memories were made with family over the years on countless trips including visiting the Holy Land, England, Scotland, Hawaii, Alaska, Boston, Arizona, and Norway. Mary was always an active member of her church and community.
She was the co-founder of the Christian Women’s Club, the book club, Scrabble group, bowling league, the Dog House Coloring club, as well as enjoying Monday morning coffee with friends. Mary was also quite talented in the kitchen baking many wonderful meals and treats over the years for her family and friends. She was quite known for her gift of hospitality.
Mary was also quite proud of her Norwegian Heritage and loved making traditional Norwegian dishes and lefse. Besides all of her work, her travels, and her hobbies that she enjoyed in life, what brought Mary the greatest joy was her family. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
