Maddern Devereaux , of Reed City, passed away peacefully with her sons by her side, Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at Assisted Lifestyles in Evart. She was 93. Mary was born April 20, 1925 in Sears, MI to Archie C. and Jennie (Brown) Smock.

She married Elmer Maddern in 1946 and he preceded her in death in 1988, Mary then married Archie Devereaux in 2002 and he preceded her in death in 2010. Mary helped her husband, Elmer, at the Maddern Shell gas station in Reed City, then worked in the cafeteria at the Reed City School and later worked for Foster’s Supermarket in Reed City. She was a member of the Reed City VFW Women’s Auxiliary, past member of the Reed City Moose Lodge, and a member of the Reed City United Methodist Church.

Mary loved to cook and bake, and was noted for her cashew brittle, homemade bread and dinner rolls. She also had uncanny luck. Mary is survived by her two sons, Jon (Bev) Maddern of La Quinta, California, Jay (Kelly) Maddern of Polson, Montana, four grandchildren, Bradley (Jessica) Maddern of Plano, Texas, Jayme (Eric) McLachlan of Evart, Heather (Brandon) Miller of Garner, North Carolina, Nate (Sara) Maddern of Traverse City, one great grandson, Hayes William McLachlan, and three sister-in-laws, Margaret Smock of Farmington Hills, MI, Jeanette Smock of Manistee, and Patricia Smock of Norton Shores, MI.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands Elmer and Archie, seven sisters, Geneva, Julia, Geraldine, Harriette, Mabel, Bessie, and Jessie, and five brothers, John, George, Arthur, Robert, and Arlan. Mary will be interred next to her husband, Elmer, in Woodland Cemetery, Reed City, MI. A graveside memorial service is in its planning stage and will be announced at a later date.
