Obituary for Maurice “Maury” Taubenheim Maurice D. “Maury” Taubenheim, 83, of Grand Island died June 26, 2018 after a courageous losing effort with COPD and lung cancer. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 2, 2018, at 10 a.m. at All Faiths Funeral Home. Dan Naranjo will officiate.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 5-7 p.m. A burial of ashes will be held at Stanley Cemetery in Amherst following the service. Maury was born September 9, 1934, the youngest of four sons to Otto and Telma (Beers) Taubenheim in rural Buffalo County near Riverdale. He attended Divide rural school and farmed with his family.
Maury was drafted into the United States Army in April 1956 and served one and a half years in Germany. Because of their advanced infantry and ranger training his unit was assigned two years of Ready Reserve and the two years of Stand By Reserve where as they could be recalled into active duty if need be. Fortunately, they were not recalled and he received his Honorable Discharge in 1962.
While in the service he attended college courses through the University of Maryland. After leaving the military service he completed his education through the US Service Education Program Bill and graduated from LaSalle University. Maury was married March 23, 1960 to Evelyn L. Leaf in Kearney where he worked and made their home.
They were blessed with two sons, Dennis D. and Daniel D. and two daughters, Diane L. and Debra L. Maury moved to Grand Island in July 1992 to be near his seriously ill wife’s mother and to be near his family. He worked several years at Ore-Ida Foods as an inspector and retired in 1999. After the death of Maury’s wife, he enjoyed a great deal of his time spent with his friends at the Grand Generation Center and was involved in many card games and special events with them.
He also loved to dance, hunt and travel. Maury was an avid collector of old and graphic state and national license plates and won several awards for his displays; but his real love was to his family. He attended all school and sports events of all his children and grandchildren and his great-grandchildren as his health would allow.
He was a coach and mentor in numerous events. Maury was an active member of the Eagles VFW and especially the American Legion where he was active in Legion baseball. He seldom missed a game of all the teams.
Maury is survived by daughters Diane (Rick) McIntosh of Grand Island and Debra Zaleski of Cairo, Nebraska. Five grandsons Derrick (Megan) Kenney of Phillips, Nebraska; Devlin Kenney of Grand Island; David (Shelby) Kenney of Omaha; Michael Kenney of Lakeview, Minnesota and James Zaleski of Grand Island. Two granddaughters, Ashley Zaleski of Fremont, Nebraska and Shelley Zaleski of Cairo, Nebraska plus 12 grandchildren: Wyatt, Taylor and Noah Kenney of Phillips, Nebraska; Kaitlin, Evlin and Alaina Kenney and Jesse Kenney all of Grand Island; Lilah and Leona Kenney of Omaha plus special friend, Alberta Stange.
Two siblings, Gerald (Velma) Taubenheim and Venia Whitesel from Broken Bow, Nebraska. Maury was preceded in death by his wife; his sons, Dennis and Daniel; and his parents; two brothers, Lee and Voris; and a sister, Leta Rose. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.
