Richard DeWitt “Dick” Bond, 97, of McHenry, MD, passed away at his home on Thursday, March 21, 2019. Born March 19, 1922, in Hooversville, PA, he was the son of the late George Edward and Carrie Rebecca (Veach) Bond. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Louise M. (Glotfelty) Bond, who passed away November 23, 2018; four sisters, Irene Glenn, Mary Bond, Alice Hauser and Virginia Rainey; two brothers, Roger W. Bond and infant, Horace Cleggatte Bond.

Dick enlisted in the U.S. Army January of 1941 and was a horse trainer in the 3rd Calvary at Fort Meyer, VA. After Pearl Harbor was attacked in December of 1941, he was then transferred to the 10th Armored Division, which trained in Georgia until June of 1944, when they shipped to Europe. He was discharged October of 1945, but was called back to service for six months in 1950, for the Korean Conflict.

He retired after 35 years of service from the MD Forestry Department and then worked for Newman Funeral Homes, P.A. He was a member of the Oak Grove Church of the Brethren, Accident Post 208, American Legion, and V.F.W. Post 10077, Garrett Co. Memorial, Deer Park, MD. He is survived by one daughter, Jenny (Dick) Bond Lyons, Harrisonburg, VA and one son, Richard L. (Vickie) Bond, Accident, MD; three grandchildren, Amy (James) Lyons Carlin; Josh (Holly) Lyons and their children, Sydney and Owen Lyons; Betsy (Jay) Thorpe, and their children, Riley and Maggie Thorpe.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 26722 Garrett Highway, Accident (McHenry), on Sunday, March 24, 2019, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow in the funeral home at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Scott Rush and Pastor Ross Glotfelty officiating. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Brethren Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by Accident Post 208, American Legion.
