Susan Ann Athey , August 18, 1959 — March 02, 2019

Susan Ann Athey, 59, of Oakland, MD, passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2019, at the Garrett Regional Medical Center, Oakland. Born August 18, 1959, in Arlington, Va. , she was the daughter of Oma Kathleen (Strawser) Athey, Oakland, and the late David Hugh Athey, Sr. of Deer Park, MD.

She was also preceded in death by her brother, Douglas Lee Athey. Susan was a 1977 graduate of Southern Garrett High School where she was a National Merit Scholar with a Senatorial Scholarship for her college of choice. Susan earned multiple advanced degrees from Frostburg State University, West Virginia University and the University of Maryland where she graduated with high honors.

Susan was a Master Social Worker and community organizer that held leadership positions in many Garrett County civic organizations. She was the past Director of the Office for Children Youth and Families and Local Management Board. She was the past president of Junior Women’s Civic Club, Garrett County’s League of Women Voters, American Association of University Women, American Red Cross, United Way and the American Cancer Society.

She was most proud to be a founder of the Garrett County Commission for Women and the Dove Center for Women. She was inducted as a member of the Garrett County Women’s Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2006 she was named as one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her son Brian Oxford (Laura) of Oakland; two daughters, Kristen Oxford (Josh), McHenry, MD; Erin-Ruth Natividad and husband, Miguel, Oakland; Susan had five beautiful granddaughters, Kylie Oxford; Cadence Natividad; Madison Lilley; Harlea Natividad; Avonlea Natividad; a special grandson, Jose Natividad; one brother, David Athey, Jr., Oakland. At Susan’s request, she will be cremated. A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 11, 2019, at Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 1100 Memorial Drive, Oakland, MD 21550 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Cindy Ackerman officiating.

Friends will be received one hour prior to service.
