Melvin Andrew Friend, 87, of Swanton, MD, passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2019, at his home. Born November 15, 1931, in Swanton, he was the son of the late John Henry and Laura Virgie (Uphole) Friend. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Ann Friend; seven brothers, Delbert, Alvin, Reuben, Paul, Raymond, Cecil, and Eugene Friend; one sister, Lavina Friend.

Melvin worked as a carpenter for Devlin Builders. He was also caretaker of the Glendale Cemetery for many years. He is survived by two sons, Joseph A. Friend, Baltimore, MD; Steven A. Friend, Acton, MA; two daughters, Susan L. Friend, Swanton; Barbara A. Monn, Oakland, MD; five grandchildren, Audra Friend; Alexander Friend; Parker Monn; Julia Friend; Cameron Friend; four great grandchildren, Gala, Connor, Lola, and Winslow.

Friends will be received at Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 1100 Memorial Drive, Oakland, MD, 21550, on Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Sam Moon officiating. Interment will be at Glendale Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to Ruth Enlow Library, 6 North 2nd Street, Oakland, MD, 21550.
