Obituary for Roberta Lee Bryan Roberta Lee Bryan, 95, died peacefully on June 10, 2018 in the company of family and friends at Treyton Oak Towers. Roberta was born in Elizabethtown, Kentucky on September 25, 1922 the daughter of Benjamin Robert Strange and Laura Belle (Fultz) Strange. She graduated from Rineyville High School in 1940 as the valedictorian of her class.

She married Russell Joseph Bryan after he returned from serving in the South Pacific during World War II. The couple moved to Louisville, where Russell took a position at International Harvester and Roberta worked for a time as a telephone operator and later as sewing professional who specialized in custom alterations. But Roberta’s true lifelong career was homemaking.

She and Russell settled on Peachtree Avenue in South Louisville, and there Roberta made a home for her husband (who passed away in 1978) and her two children. Over the next 60 years, her home became a warm and welcoming gathering spot for generations of family, friends, and neighbors, and the neighborhood children who gathered in her kitchen for coffee, iced tea, homemade cookies, cobblers, pies, and conversation – a tradition that lasted until a couple of months ago when she relocated to Treyton Oaks. Roberta loved raising flowers and vegetables and was a master of traditional southern cookery who spent many of her waking hours in the kitchen or at the sewing machine.

She put up tomatoes, beans, and superb jams and jellies. She cooked corn bread, white beans, green beans, pot roasts, fried chicken, meat loaf, mashed potatoes, gravy, dumplings, and the occasional salmon croquette (despite her aversion to fish). She also knew how to put together a holiday spread.

Roberta was a devout Catholic (Most Blessed Sacrament), and an enthusiastic fan of UK basketball and football, and a lifelong Democrat with a deep compassion for those less fortunate than her. Roberta is survived by a son, Robert M. Bryan (Barbara) of New Albany; and daughter, Mary G Bryan (Marty Rosen); grandchildren, Chelsea Bryan and Russell Bryan (Lindsey); great-grandchildren, Jack, Harrison, and Maxwell Bryan, her grand-dog Henry, and a large extended family, including three especially close nieces, Janet Bryan, Donna Patteson, and Patty Veirs. She was preceded in death by her husband and by her siblings, Allen R. Strange (Jean); Frances E. Bryan (Jim) Dorothy Routte (Delma); and Charles Forrester(Ophelia).

The family expresses special gratitude to Roberta’s network of caregiving friends: Angela Jones, Kelly Yurt, Kathy Smith, and Paul Hoskins, as well as Ed Clarke and others at Most Blessed Sacrament. In addition, the family thanks the staff at Treyton Oak Towers for their caring support and assistance. The funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Thursday at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 3509 Taylor Blvd.

Visitation is 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Joseph E. Ratterman & Son, 7336 Southside Drive, with burial in St. James Cemetery in Elizabethtown.
