Born on July 14, 1959 to Roger and Marylyn Garrett, Ed spent his first years in Waterloo, Iowa with his parents and his sister Linda. The family relocated to Davis, California in 1962, which remained his home base until his move to Hardwick, Vermont in January 2017.
His childhood summers were usually spent in Atlanta, Missouri at his maternal grandparents‘ farm. Ed graduated from Davis High School in 1977 and attended California State University at Chico the following year. During his school years, Ed was an avid 4-H member, working and competing in such diverse projects as woodworking, vegetable gardening, pheasants, sewing, small engines and sheep.
This diversity is reflected in his vocational history, which included furniture making/woodworking, farm and construction management, agricultural advising and lab technician work and organic gardening. He also restored a historical home from Davis which had been moved to his acreage outside of town. After returning to college in 2008 Ed completed a Bachelors‘ degree in International Agricultural Development at UC Davis and a Masters‘ in International Education at the SIT Graduate Institute in Brattleboro, Vermont.
During these years, he was also a visiting researcher and instructor as a Fullbright Scholar in Budapest, Hungary, and held several volunteer positions, working in community and farm-to-school gardening projects in Detroit, Michigan and with Americorps/Vista in Montpelier, Vermont. Besides being talented in many areas, Ed was also a very giving person, looking to support others however he could. He opened up his home and farm in Davis to students eager to learn about gardening and agriculture.
He mentored many young people through his engagement in community development, and volunteered his time to help his colleagues in Hungary publish research papers in English. He touched many hearts by always offering a listening ear and being supportive in difficult times. For the last two years of his life, Ed lived in Hardwick in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.
As an agricultural consultant he was working to facilitate a collective that would provide a support network for new small holder farmers coming to the local area. Ed is survived by his father, Roger Garrett of Atlanta, Missouri, his sister Linda and brother-in-law Hans Scheib of Germany, and a large extended family. He is predeceased by his nephew Benjamin Scheib and his mother Marylyn Garrett.
Graveside service will be held at 11:30 am at the Mt. Tabor Cemetery east of Atlanta, MO on February 9, 2019. Family gathering will be held prior at Elliott Funeral Home in Atlanta at 10:30 am.
