Stephen Konopka November 23, 1926 – January 18, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Stephen Konopka, 92, of Palmer Twp. , PA, passed away on Friday, January 18, 2019 in Lehigh Valley Hospice, Allentown, PA. He was born on November 23, 1926, in West Easton, PA, the only son of the late Makar and Anna (Terleski) Konopka.
Stephen was married to the former Mary Ann Alfano for 71 years. He was a graduate of Easton High School class of 1944. With special permission, Stephen entered military service at the age of 17 years old.
He served in the US Navy in WWII combat on board the LST 72 and the LST 347. He was active in both the European Campaign, where he transported troops to the beaches of Normandy on D- Day, and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign maneuvering through mine-laden rivers to resupply ships. Stephen was a self-made man and owner of a roofing and siding construction company, an Arco service station, and a local restaurant.
Stephen was gifted with a diversity of talents enabling him to successfully accomplish almost any endeavor. Steve had a quick wit and ever-positive attitude and an enduring deep faith and love for his family. An accomplished outdoorsman, he was an excellent hunter and fly-fisherman, sports he especially enjoyed with his son Stephen.
Steve was a lifelong member of the Green Pond Country Golf Club and the Holy Name Bowling League where he garnered many trophies. Steve and his wife Mary Ann enjoyed cruising and travelling abroad. For decades, Stephen coordinated his Navy shipmate reunions, planning exciting and patriotic destinations.
Stephen was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Easton and the Holy Name Society and was an active volunteer for years for St. Vincent De Paul Charity. Steve loved singing, dancing, sports, and the out of doors. He especially enjoyed entertaining family and friends.
Steve lived life with gusto. Besides his wife, Stephen is survived by daughters Michelle Strawn and husband Thomas of Franklin, MA, and Stephanie K. Skerchock and husband John of Chester Springs, PA with whom Stephen resided for a time, and son Stephen F. Konopka and wife Terry of Nazareth, PA, grandchildren Margaux Curtis (Julie)of OH, Gabrielle Simarrian (Glen) of MA, Samantha Dillon(Austin) of Kennett Square, PA, Grant Skerchock of Chester Springs, PA, Sarrah Konopka and Kaitlin Konopka of Allentown, PA, Stephen A. Konopka of Philadelphia, great grandchildren Gavin and Giana Simarrian and soon to be born Baby Dillon. Stephen was predeceased by sisters Mae Fritzo, Ann Kramer, Francis Fox, Lillian Kubilus and Helen Montrim, 3 nieces and 4 nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 25, 2019, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and an additional calling hour on Saturday, January 26, 2019, from 9:15am to 10:15am at the Morello Funeral Home, Inc., 3720 Nicholas Street, Easton, PA (Palmer Twp). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, at 11:00am at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 9th & Lehigh Streets, Easton, PA. Interment will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Palmer Twp.
