Alvin’s Obituary Alvin J. Miller, 85, a resident of Lacey Springs, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2019 at Harrisonburg Health and Rehab Center. Mr. Miller was born on May 9, 1933 in Dover, Delaware and was the son of the late Jacob and Sarah Yoder Miller. He spent his childhood in Stuarts Draft as part of the Amish community and then moved to Harrisonburg in 1950.
He was employed by Weaver’s Hatchery and worked various jobs including owning his own dump truck which he used to haul gravel and plow snow for the state. Alvin and Sarah donated many hours to the Virginia Mennonite Relief sale including organizing Friday night suppers and making furniture. He enjoyed camping at various campgrounds, hunting, fishing and working in his wood shop.
His favorite camping trip was taken across the country in 2005. He was a member of Ridgeway Mennonite Church. On June 30, 1979, he married Sarah Simon Miller who survives.
Also surviving are his children, Susan Webster and husband James Tyree of Richmond, Betty Durrett and husband Jeff of Dayton; step-son, Rodney Conley and wife Penny; siblings, Irvin Miller and wife Elizabeth of Stuarts Draft, David Miller of Newton, North Carolina, Amanda Schrock and husband Noah of Costa Rica; half-siblings, Alma Troyer and husband Ezra of Newport, Maine, Rhoda Miller and husband Dan of Itasca Texas, Joe Miller and wife Freda of Valley, Washington; sister-in-law, Alice Miller of Stuarts Draft; brother-in-law, Calvin Troyer of Stuarts Draft; two grandchildren, Lincoln Miller, Jillian Miller; two step grandchildren, Adam Conley, Morgan Conley; three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his siblings, Elva Miller and husband Amos, Ida Schrock and husband Elmer; half- siblings, Miriam Heatwole and husband Joseph, Elmer Miller, Martha Miller and Mary Troyer; and a sister-in-law, Esther Miller. Pastor Ben Risser will conduct a funeral service on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Ridgeway Mennonite Church in Harrisonburg.
Burial will follow at Grace Mennonite Fellowship Cemetery in Lacey Springs. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Ridgeway Mennonite Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Virginia Mennonite Relief Sale, 601 Parkwood Drive, Harrisonburg, Virginia 22802.
