Dorothy Velma Mackey April 11, 1929 – January 25, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Dorothy Velma Mackey, age 89, of Kiowa, died Friday, January 25, 2019 at her home. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 28, 2019 at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home Chapel in McAlester with Rev. Haskell Melton officiating.

Burial will follow at Kiowa Cemetery. Dorothy was born on April 11, 1929 in Lamar, Oklahoma to Earl and Opal (Self) Ponder. She married Dale Mackey on September 28, 1946 in McAlester and they were married for over 72 years.

Dot worked a variety of jobs in her life. She worked at the Army Ammunition Plan, styled hair, cooked, and was a waitress. She was known for the number of plates she could carry on her arm to the table.

She kept house, raised her sons with Dale and cooked wonderful meals for their extended families. Her Carmel popcorn, peanut brittle and fruit cakes were legendary. She loved to shop, painted ceramics, and was a lovely decorator.

She enjoyed camping, boating and fishing. She thoroughly enjoyed Wheel of Fortune. She was always up to date on current events and could discuss any topic with anyone.

She was the epitome of a classy lady. Survivors include her husband, Dale Mackey; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Pat Mackey, Mike and Marlene Mackey; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and sister, Marg Barnett. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Ruby Horn Maxwell; brother, John Earl Ponder; special uncle, Lawrence Ponder; grandson, Christopher Mackey and great-granddaughter, Reece Harbuck.

Pallbearers will be Bradley Horn, Brent Horn, Tim Lane, Jarret Wilson, Larry Gill and Greg Mackey. “I was strong, even though my body was weak. I carried all the love without the use of my feet.

I would fill hearts and silent the screams of empty stomachs. I used my voice for nothing but truth. Some would say I have a heart bigger than most.

I replaced loss with love in the presence of hope. I married the man perfect for me and soon enough his handsome face I will see. For my time on earth has had its run, and now it’s my time to rest in the sun and there I will wait”.
