He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Eileen (Gruebel) Ruzicka and five brothers, Ron, Greg, Tom, Tim, and Mick, and four sisters, Kathy, Sharon, Joycelyn, and Pam. He was a loving uncle to 16 nieces and nephews and 20 great nieces and great nephews. Doug grew up on a farm in Sargent Nebraska.
He loved his family and his favorite dog, a German Shepherd called King. He graduated college from Kearney State College (now University of Nebraska Kearney) where he studied Computer Science which he used in his 28-year career as an IT Specialist with the FBI in Washington DC. Doug took an early retirement in February 2014.
In retirement, he started his own handyman services business he named “Ask Mr. Doug”. The business started off with mostly customers of former coworkers and neighbors expanding the customer base to a number of military homeowners. He loved having a different task to work on every day and to set his own hours!
Doug was very active. Being an avid football fan, he loved watching the Steelers and University of Nebraska football games. He was a great golfer, getting a hole in one at Old Hickory Golf Club, Hole #13 on October 2, 2017.
He belonged to a weekly bowling league where on January 30, 2001, he bowled a high game of 296. Doug enjoyed going home to Nebraska to hunt with his brothers and nephews, bringing venison back to enjoy in Virginia. He enjoyed growing a vegetable garden and shared his bounty with all his neighbors and coworkers.
He loved to cook and try out new recipes not only on his wife, but at his famous July 4th and Christmas parties. He also liked to bet the ponies, gamble at casinos, and play poker with the boys. Doug loved to joke around and had a great sense of humor.
He would tease all his nieces, nephews and friends’ children and get them all “wound up” and then return them to their parents.
