Stanley Wayne Hughes, 86, of Grand Island passed away on Thursday, February 28, 2019. A visitation with family and friends will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, March 4th, at All Faiths Funeral Home. Burial and graveside service with military honors provided by the United States Air Force will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 5th, at Malcolm Cemetery, Malcolm, NE.

Stan was born August 3, 1932 at Long Pine, NE on a ranch on the Calamus River, the son of Elmer and Etta (Newcomb) Hughes. He graduated from Ainsworth High School and joined the Air Force, February 1952. A Korean War Veteran, Stan was honorably discharged February of 1960.

While stationed in San Jose, CA, Stan worked in construction and for IBM. Later, the family spent time in Missouri, and Stan was the owner of A1 Real Estate Company in Buffalo, MO. The majority of his life, Stan was a cattle rancher, a registered Hereford and Angus breeder.

He ranched at Lincoln, built and was owner/operator of Cattle Growers Feedlot at Stapleton and ranched at Callaway, NE. Stan was past vice president of the school board at Stapleton High School, past member of the Eagles Club, American Legion, and was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans, American Hereford Association and American Angus Association. Stanley’s favorite pastime was writing poetry and he has hundreds of poems to his name.

Those who will cherish Stan’s memory include his son, Roger (Irene) Hughes and daughter, Susan Kramer all of Grand Island; grandchildren, Victor Kramer (Stacy Munoz) of North Platte, Elizabeth (Tyler) Neal of McCook, Austin Kramer (Teresa Evans) of North Sioux City, SD, Dutton Hughes (Malarie Dunning) of Omaha and Dylan Hughes of Omaha; great-grandchildren, Justus Kramer, Tayleigh Kramer, Kiana Kramer, Addison Neal, Alani Neal, and Coltan Kramer; step great-grandchildren, Lainie Evans and Logan Evans; ex-daughter-in-law, Nelpha Hughes; sister-in-law, Alta Mullins of Tampa, FL; brother-in-law, Willard Parsons of Flemington, MD; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline (Carlisle) Hughes; parents; brothers, Melvin, Lyle, Wilber and Calvin; and sisters, Alma Hartford, Velma Carter, Verna Brys and Agnes Parsons. The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Kimberly Mickels and the AsceraCare Hospice team for their support and care.

In addition, thanks to the nurses on 5th floor CHI Health St. Francis and all the staff at Grand Island Good Samaritan Society. A special thank you to Judy Dietz who truly cared enough to give hugs and hellos every day. Memorials are suggested to the family.
