Dwight L. Speeks, age 81, of Bluefield, Virginia, passed away Thursday, December 20, 2018 in a Bluefield, West Virginia hospital with his wife of 60 years by his side. He was born in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia and was the son of the late Lonnie and Maggie Burke Speeks. He was a retired school administrator from Tazewell County Public School System.

Dwight graduated high school from Oak Hill Academy Class of 1955, received his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech, and received his master’s degree from ETSU. He was a proud member of the first ever men’s basketball team at Oak Hill Academy and his graduation from VT prompted his lifetime love and support for the Hokies. Dwight was a member of the Fincastle Presbyterian Church in Bluefield, Virginia and served many terms as an elder.

He also held various offices in the Abingdon Presbytery. Dwight loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed working outdoors. He will be missed by all that knew and loved him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ida Mae Speeks; and two brothers, Floyd and Harry Lee Speeks; and one daughter in law, Cathy Helton Speeks. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Survivors are: His Wife: Jimmie Ruth Steele Speeks, Daughter: Nancy Lynn Watson and husband, Jeff of Greensboro, NC Sons: Danny Speeks of Auburn, Alabama Jeff Speeks and Valerie Tatum of Tazewell, Virginia Grandchildren: Maggie Holder, Keri Speeks, Michael Watson, and Melody Speeks.

Great Grandchildren: Aly Speeks, Kylee Bennett, and Roland Bennett A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 1 PM at the Fincastle Presbyterian Church on Route 720 Double Gates in Bluefield, Virginia. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6-8 PM at the church and on Saturday one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fincastle Presbyterian Church, Box 409, Bluefield, Virginia 24605.
