Gehman, age 96, died peacefully at the Souderton Mennonite Homes in Souderton, PA, on January 28, 2019. Harley was born on November 25, 1922 to Allen and Alice (Beideman) Gehman in Line Lexington, PA. On March 4, 1944 he married Anna Kulp with whom he enjoyed 74 years of marriage.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his only sibling, Edith Moyer; and his son, Allen Gehman. Survivors include three daughters: Marilyn Zook and husband Dave of Waynesboro, PA; Louise O’Connell and husband Jim of Paoli, IN; and Elaine Gehman of Telford, PA. Also surviving Harley are four grandchildren: Brenda Zook Friesen of Forest Grove, OR; Michael Zook of Harrisonburg, VA; Carrie Chisholm of Anchorage, AK; Jill Stahly of Goshen, IN; and eight great-grandchildren.
Harley enjoyed a long-time occupation as a truck driver. In earlier years he drove a delivery truck of bakery goods for Alderfer’s Bakery in Harleysville, PA, and later he drove truck many years for Hatfield Packing Company in Hatfield, PA. Post-retirement jobs included driving a school bus and delivering auto parts for NAPA.
He took great pride in his jobs and was known for always having a clean truck. He was a member of Lansdale Mennonite Church and then Salford Mennonite Church. For many years he served the church as a song leader.
He was a long-time member of the Sunday School Meditations Quartet. He was also an active member of Transport for Christ. Harley was unwavering in his Christian faith and a good steward of his res.
He was very dependable and conscientious with anything that was entrusted to him. He always saw the good in other people and, above all, he was humble and kind. His gentle spirit, the twinkle in his eye and the smile on his face will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Souderton Mennonite Homes Summit View Chapel, 207 W. Summit Street, Souderton, PA 18964. Friends can meet with the family from 9:30 to 11:00 prior to the service. Burial will take place at Salford Mennonite Church cemetery following the service.
