Jean (Dunlap) Speer, 96, of South Bend Township, beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 in her home. Born on June 14, 1921 in Cherry Tree, PA she was a daughter of the late Randall and Helen (Wilson) Dunlap. Jean was a graduate of Cherry Tree High School and went on to earn her degree in elementary education at Indiana Teachers College.

She taught at Vandergrift Heights elementary school for six years and retired in 1982 after teaching… Read More » for 30 years at Kittanning Township elementary school. Jean lived in South Bend Township most of her life and was a very involved member of Apollo United Presbyterian Church. She was a volunteer for both the Elderton and Apollo Meals on Wheels.

She enjoyed reading, knitting, cooking and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John Lang Speer, Jr. on January 23, 2009; siblings, Jodie Albert, Rose Ann Lee, Elizabeth Thorpe, Samuel, Clair, Douglas, Jack Paul, Ralph and James Dunlap. Survivors include her daughter, Alice (Dr. Michael) McConnell of Birmingham, AL; son, John (Jeanne) Speer, III of Shelocta; grandchildren, Michael McConnell of Birmingham, AL, Curtis (Caroline) Speer of Indiana, PA, Anna (Mo Paul) Amanlou of Pawley’s Island, SC, Mary Kate (Brian) Guerrieri of Cheswick, great grandchildren, Evan and Ellen Speer, Roman and Ariana Guerrieri, Lang Paul, Katherine Jean Amanlou, Michael, Brett, Lucas and Emma Norman; numerous nieces and nephews and life-long friends and co-workers, Betsy French, Nancy Smith and Jane Blaney.

Visitation will be on Thursday, June 7th from 5-8 pm in the Curran-Shaffer Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 100 Owens View Avenue, Apollo. There will be additional visitation on Friday from 10-11 am in Apollo United Presbyterian Church, 401 1st Street, Apollo where services will begin 11 am with Reverend Lea Austin officiating. Burial will be in South Bend Cemetery, South Bend Township.

The family suggests memorial contributions in Jean’s memory be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance, PO Box 32141, New York, NY 10087-2141 or the Apollo United Presbyterian Church, 401 1st Street, Apollo, PA 15613.
