Cecil J. Shaffer, 87, Allegheny Township, formerly of Washington Township, passed away on Monday, July 23, 2018 in Monroeville Rehabilitation & Wellness Center. Born March 21, 1931 in Washington Township, he was a son of the late Elliot & Helen (Sheppard) Shaffer. Cecil proudly served with the United States Army during the Korean War, one of five Shaffer family members that faithfully served our country.

He was involved with the Battle of the 38th Parallel, and was later… Read More » wounded by mortar fire in 1953. Cecil was discharged as a sergeant in 1954, and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. He was the owner/operator of Shaffer Trucking and Shaffer Coal Company for many years, retiring in 1995.

Cecil was a 32nd Degree Mason and former member of the Bethel Lodge, as well as a former member of the Washington Township Fire Dept. He liked hunting with his sons, enjoyed woodworking, and loved being outside & gardening, including canning. Cecil was an avid Steelers and Pirates fan, enjoyed going to the casino, and spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, William “Buster”, Edwin, & Elliott Shaffer, Jr. Cecil is survived by his longtime companion of 39 years, Larue L. Mumaw; sons, Cecil J. Shaffer, Jr. of Nashville, NC, David A. (Toni) Shaffer of Allegheny Township; daughters, Vickie A. (Jeffrey) Borowitz of Rolesville, NC, Diane L. (Jim Rastetter) Lawley of Slippery Rock, PA, Barbara A. (Allen Wyatt) Kichline of South Datona, Florida; grandchildren, Michael, Ashley, Matthew, Rachel, Ryan, Allison, Nicholas, Steven, Jeffrey; six great grandchildren; siblings, Betty Baer, Dorothy (Jim) Root, Joanne Bollinger, Raymond Shaffer; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends will be received on Thursday, July 26, 2018 from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 p.m. in the Curran-Shaffer Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 100 Owens View Ave. , Apollo.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 27, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Lea Austin officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Vandergrift Veterans Honor Guard immediately following the funeral service. Interment will be private.

Memorial Contributions may be made in Cecil’s memory to Apollo Presbyterian Church, 401 1st St., Apollo, PA 15613.
