Joy Joan Schmirler, 96, of Brazil, Indiana passed away at home on September 9, 2018 following a brief illness. Joy was born in West Bend, Wisconsin, on June 17, 1922 the daughter of Victor and Veronica (Rhoden) Daskam. She attended high school in Oshkosh, Wisconsin where she met her husband Richard Schmirler.

In her earlier years… Read More » she enjoyed taking care of her garden and yard. She was an avid reader and educated herself on many different topics even into her 90’s.

She loved being with family and enjoyed time with her grandchildren. She was a faithful and devoted member of the former St. Paul Lutheran Church in Brazil where she enjoyed teaching Sunday school and Bible school. She was also actively involved in different church and organizational activities.

She has been a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Terre Haute since 1990. She was preceded in death by her parents Victor and Veronica Daskam; husband Richard Schmirler; a daughter Marla Taliaferro; and a sister Francis Esslinger. She is survived by 2 daughters: Pat Casassa (Jack) of Brazil and Laura Duncan (Tim) Morrison, Illinois; grandchildren: Christy Casassa of Brazil, Carey Casassa of Brazil, Cameron “Cam” Casassa (Jeri Jo) of Brazil, Connor Duncan of Morrison, Illinois, Kaitlin Vandermyde (Will) of Morrison, Illinois, Kim Taliaferro of Sandy, Utah, Rich Taliaferro (Christina) of Fairfield, California; great-grandchildren: Kason Casassa of Brazil, Kinsley Casassa of Brazil, Eliza Vandermyde of Morrison, Illinois, Sean St. Martin of Sandy, Utah, Quinn St. Martin of Sandy, Utah, Alexis Taliaferro of Fairfield, California, Marcus Taliaferro of Fairfield, California, Elaina Taliaferro of Fairfield, California, and Daniel Taliaferro of Fairfield, California; a brother: William Daskam (Marlene) of Kiel, Wisconsin as well as a niece and several nephews.

Visitation will be at Immanuel Lutheran Church 645 Poplar Street Terre Haute, Indiana 47807 on Friday, September 14, 2018 from 10-11. Services will be held at the church, on Friday, at 11:00am with Pastor Jacob Sutton officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery.
