Lela Hershberger Bender , March 23, 1924 — December 17, 2018

Lela (Hershberger) Bender, 94, of Grantsville, MD, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, December 17, 2018. She was born near Grantsville March 23, 1924, to the late Menno and Minnie (Yoder) Hershberger. She was also preceded in death by her husband Philip F. Bender; one son, Kenneth; two brothers, Alvin and Ray; and eight sisters, Annie Beachy, Ivy, Freda Yommer, Ada Swartzentruber, Mabel Yoder, Ruth Tice, Edna Yoder and Grace Roberts.

Lela was the last surviving member of her family. Lela is survived by two sons, Clifford (Gloria), Lancaster, PA; Wesley (Helene), Los Angeles, CA; three daughters, Sharon (Arlin) Bender, Unity, WI; Glenda (Bob) Yoder, Salisbury, PA; and Lila (Arlin) Maust, Accident, MD; 18 grandchildren Karl Bender and friend, Kim Himelright, Daryl (Sheri) Bender, Doris Bender, Michael (Loretta) Bender, Delores (Thomas) Leinbach, Marcia Bender, Charity (Dennis) Nissley, Matthew (Dawn) Bender, Andrea (Linford) Steiner, Lisa (Brent) Ragsdale, Craig Yoder, Jay (Carol) Maust, Karla Maust, Krystal (Dana) Bender, Keith (Lesa) Maust, Kevin (Alissa) Maust, Jennifer (Troy) Sommers, Greg Bender and friend, Jennifer Walsh; 39 great grandchildren; one brother-in-law Paul Bender, Grantsville, MD; two sisters-in-law Sarah Miller, Lancaster, PA; and Martha Bender, Kalona, IA. Lela was a member of Maple Glen Mennonite Church, where she served for many years, teaching Sunday School, serving on the food committee and Sewing Circle.

She sewed hundreds of quilt tops and many baby gowns for missions until recently when her fingers became too numb. She was a Red Cross blood services volunteer for over 50 years, having become involved when her son, Kenneth, needed blood transfusions as a child. Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the Maple Glen Mennonite Church, Friday, December 21, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Philip Moser and Pastor Tim Yoder officiating.

Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the services. Interment will be in the Maple Glen Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Allegany Boys Camp, 20700 Wagoner Cutoff Rd.
