Lucille Toner Long March 10, 1928 – February 18, 2019 Share this obituary View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Lucille Toner Long, a resident of Macon, Missouri for over 60 years died on Monday, February 18, 2019 at Heisinger Bluffs in Jefferson City, Missouri. She was born March 10, 1928 in Caldwell County, Missouri, the second child of Glenn and Nettie Toner. She attended rural school and graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1945.

While in high school she was a drum majorette and Barnwarming Queen. She graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia, with Bacelor’s of Science Degree in Education, Home Economics, in August of 1949. In May of 1976, she completed her Master’s of Arts Degree in Guidance and Counseling at Northwest Missouri State University in Kirksville.

On June 5, 1949 Lucille married George E. Long from Meadville, Missouri in a ceremony at the Evangelical Congregational Chapel in Columbia, Missouri. That fall she began teaching Home Economics at Huntsville, Missouri. At the end of the school year she joined George in Oskaloosa, Iowa where he worked for the Iowa Highway Department.

In 1952 Lucille and George made their home in Macon, Missouri. George was the district geologist for the Missouri Highway Department. She resided in Macon after his death in 2013 until moving to Jefferson City in 2016.

Lucille was the social services director at Loch Haven Nursing Home for 15 years. Previous to that she worked for Macon Public Schools as the visiting teacher for Head Start in the 1960s and as a substitute teacher in the middle school. She was an active member of the First Christian Church of Macon for nearly 60 years serving as a deaconess and librarian and on numerous committees.

In her later years she was an enthusiastic member of the church book club. While her children were growing up, she was an assistant Girl Scout leader, Tiger Maws member, 4-H leader, and PTA officer. She was a member of the Macon County Extension Club and a founding member of the Jolly Jills Canasta Club.

After her retirement she managed the Macon County Food Pantry for over a decade. She also serviced on numerous local, non-profit boards. Lucille is survived by her three children; her daughter Carol Long of Winona, Minnesota; and her two sons Robert (Diane) of Kansas City, Missouri, and Brian (Barbara) of Jefferson City, Missouri.

Others include her grandchildren Danielle Long Bourne (Matthew) of Columbia; Kevin Long of Kansas City, Missouri; and Audrey Long Schroer (Hunter) of Boulder, Colorado. She leaves two great-grandchildren Nathan and Camden Bourne of Columbia, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her sister Dorothy Toner Pendergrass, her husband, and her parents.

Lucille faithfully followed the Missouri Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals. She enjoyed sewing, reading, and having a good, long conversation. She was a life-long lover of cats and cherished her feline friends.

She was always ready to help someone in need and was a valued member of the Macon community. Funeral service will be 10:30 am at the First Christian Church in Macon with Dr. Dave Leslie officiating. Burial will be in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, MO.

Visitation will be 9:30 am, until the time of service, on Friday at the church. Memorials are suggested for the First Christian Church of Macon and Macon County Ministries.
