“Let me tell you a story ‘bout a man named Lynn. Husband, hunter, father, worker, quite a specimen. Married Dorothy Musick, had a Clingo family, and they raised six wild children down in Californieee”.
This was his song and this is his brief story; On the 24th of May 2018, Lynn Edward Clingo age 97 passed peaceably from this life in the early morning hours, eager to join his wife Dorothy in heaven. He was born in Mesa, Arizona on the 20th of January 1921 to Frank Edward Clingo and Esther Lynn Davis. When he was around 8, they moved their family–Lynn and his sister Darleen–to East Los Angeles.
Because of the Great Depression, Lynn learned to work very hard at an early age, and not to waste food and to also value the dollar. His mother was dear to him, and he always took great care of her. Lynn graduated from Garfield High School as the “big man on campus” in 1939.
He served in the United States Navy in the Coast Guard after Pearl Harbor between 1942-45. There he was well known for his arm wrestling, shooting pool and boxing—and won many matches—and respect. After the war ended, Lynn purchased some land in Los Angeles and built an auto mechanic business.
However, because of the crime he saw, he joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s office and served in various positions from the bailiff to an LA County sheriff and later to a well-respected detective for 30 years, from 1946 to 1976. When Lynn went to a church singles activity and saw a very cute gal in a swing, he decided to push her but ended up pushing her off the swing. Being a great sport, Dorothy Ann Musick (1934-2016) still agreed to marry him soon after that in the LDS St. George Temple November 25, 1952.
In an early love letter to Lynn, Dorothy called him, “the most wonderful, handsomest, bravest, strongest, and sweetest man in the whole world”. In their California years, Lynn and Dorothy purchased their first home in the Los Angeles area and then built a family home in Hacienda Heights where they raised 5 active sons and one sweet daughter in a neighborhood full of boys. Lynn planted fruit trees and taught the family to take care of a wide variety of animals and taught his children the value of good, honest work.
A natural athlete, Lynn enjoyed a variety of sports himself and always supported his children’s sporting endeavors. An avid hunter and fisherman, he spent his life providing for his family and respecting the great outdoors with his family well into his 90’s. In 1977, Lynn and Dorothy built a home in Pleasant Grove, Utah, where they enjoyed the mountains and the beautiful views.
After his retirement, Lynn worked at a variety of jobs such as laying cable, building a four-plex, serving as a security guard in several stores, and the unique position of serving as a bodyguard to a Saudi Arabian prince. After Lynn and Dorothy supported all five of their sons on LDS missions, they left November 21st, 1988 and served in England Leeds mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where they were much loved. Both Lynn and Dorothy have deep, faithful ancestral roots to the beginnings of the nation and LDS church.
His family, friends, church members and many a friendly stranger have enjoyed Lynn’s sheriff stories; from chasing criminals, shooting out tires, and arresting “crooks”. He taught his posterity to respect the law and most of all, to keep the commandments, go to church and to get to work. He was in great physical shape his entire life, and the family could always count on “Grampa” for an arm wrestle, great stories, honest opinions, sports talk, fun boating adventures, fishing, hunting and straight-talk—and most of all—a good laugh.
Lynn Clingo is loved by many, leaves a numerable posterity-and all who knew him celebrate his life and the love he had for his family and living an excellent, faithful life. Lynn E. Clingo (1921-2018) and Dorothy Ann Musick (1934-2016) have 33 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and five sons; Lynn Alma (Cindy Stewart), David John (Cathy Willard), Daniel Lee (Karie Allan), Paul Joseph (Renee Ward 1962-2018), Kyle Edward (Jennifer Court) and one daughter, Lorrel (Lori) Alise (Craig) Nilsen (1963-2011). We would like to express a special thanks to Lynn Jr. and his wife Cindy—and family—who took special care of “Dad” these last two years while he waited to join Grandma Dorothy in heaven.
They are true angels on earth! Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. in the Manila Tenth Ward Chapel, 3785 West Boxelder Drive (4000 North) Cedar Hills, Utah. Family and friends may attend a viewing from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. prior to the service.
