As a child, she traveled by horse and buggy in Darlington; many years later she flew in an airliner six miles high to Hawaii. As a teacher, she saw education advance from four grades in one room in Shannondale to teaching students in Darlington and later at a modern facility in Indianapolis at Stephen Decatur Elementary School.

She traveled with her husband and their family on annual vacations throughout the United States, including trips to Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Colorado, Niagara Falls, Virginia and numerous other places. The two also journeyed to Europe as chaperones for students in the Ben Davis High School Marching Band. As a college student in Terre Haute, on a blind date, Margaret met Dwight Walters of Robinson, Illinois.

This seemingly chance encounter blossomed, and several years later, the two began a marriage that lasted 65 years. They raised two daughters, Myra Dunn Abbott of Crawfordsville and Melinda Rogers of Foley, Alabama. Margaret was a graduate of Darlington High School, Indiana State Teachers College and Butler University.

She was a member of Tri Kappa Sorority, Indiana State Teachers Association, First United Methodist Church, and was an avid Bridge player and golfer. She actively supported her girls in Brownies, Girl Scouts, 4-H, and many other endeavors. Margaret drove her car, played Bridge and enjoyed dining out well beyond the age of 100.

She continued to play Scrabble on Sundays with her good friend, Betty Armstrong. Her many friends described her as “amazing” and their “role model”. She was very proud of her Brainard lineage, which she could trace back to Daniel Brainerd, who came to America as an indentured servant in 1641.

She attended two Brainerd Society reunions in Haddam, Connecticut. At that event, it was especially notable that Margaret was one of four generations that included her daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter. Margaret Virginia Walters, of Crawfordsville, passed away on Monday, January 28, at Bickford Assisted Living in Crawfordsville.

She is survived by her two daughters and son-in-law Paul Abbott, plus two grandchildren, Elaine (Dan) Ricks, Washington, DC; and Tagg (Natasha) Rogers, Mobile, Alabama. She has four great grandchildren, Hayden (Loveza) Buckner and Sarah Buckner, Minneapolis, Minnesota; Wyatt (Adriana) Buckner, Duluth, Minnesota; and Austin Ream, Mobile, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Lynee Brainard (née Lynch), her husband Dwight Walters, sisters Marian Cougar (née Brainard) and Mildred Bell (née Brainard).
