Phyllis N. Hughes, 88, a resident of the Beaverton community, died Thursday, April 19, 2018 at the Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center in Portland. PHYLLIS NATHELLE (HIGBY) WHITE HUGHES was born January 10, 1930 in Forest Grove, Oregon, the daughter of the late Harold B. “Ted” Higby and Ethna B. (Nash) Higby. She was raised and received her education in the Forest Grove community, graduating from Forest Grove High School in 1948.

Upon her high school graduation, she attended Pacific University in Forest Grove, where she met Charles “Chuck” Scarborough White. They were married in August 1949 and had two children, Allan and Donna. Following their marriage, they resided in the Forest Grove community.

They later divorced but remained friends. In 1960, Phyllis was united in marriage to Tyrone Vincent “Terry” Hughes. They had met on a blind date.

Following their marriage, they made their home in the Aloha community, until 1970, when they moved to Idaho, setting in Boise. They lived in Boise for eleven years, until 1981, when they returned to the Aloha community, where she had resided since. They had two children, Kelly and Scott.

With her husband, Terry and his work friends at Chevrolet, they were able to travel to Rome, Hawaii, The Bahamas and a cruise to Mexico, just to name a few. Phyllis and Terry were very involved in the Episcopal Churches in Beaverton and Boise, Idaho After her children were raised, Phyllis worked as a manager at McDonald’s in Tanasbourne for over 30 years before retiring at the age of 81. Phyllis was an active volunteer for over 73 years in numerous Masonic organizations, both in Oregon and Idaho.

She started in the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls as a member and served as Worthy Advisor in Forest Assembly, then continued on as an adult advisor, Mother Advisor, State Mother Advisor and Grand Deputy Emeritus where she touched the lives of many young women with her nurturing ways. Phyllis served as Worthy Matron of Tualatin Chapter # 31, Order of the Eastern Star numerous times, was Grand Royal Matron of the Order of the Amaranth 1995-96 and a member of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem and Daughters of the Nile. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Terry in 2007, parents, Ted and Ethna Higby and her brother, Harold F. Higby, in 1985.

Survivors include her four children and their spouses, C. Allan and Jan White, of Gervais; Donna and Warren Cole, of Portland; Kelly Hughes, of Aloha, and Scott Hughes, of Aloha. Also surviving are her five grandchildren, Sarah Cole and her husband, Keith Wilson, of Beaverton; Matthew Cole and his wife, Kaity, of Portland; Jason Cole, of Beaverton, Tyson Wiedrich, of Aloha, Oregon and Alena Wiedrich, of Portland. her great-grandson, Elliot Cole Wilson and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
