Richard Gustavus Stanton, 79, of McHenry, MD, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at The Maples of Towson, Towson, MD. Born May 31, 1939, in Bittinger, MD, he was a son of the late Melvin Hoye Stanton and Mabel Waltrude (Bittinger) Stanton. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Hoye, Robert, and Owen Stanton, and sister, Mary Stanton Miller.

His wife of 58 years, Juanita (Buckel) Stanton, died in 2017. Dick was a graduate of Northern Garrett High School, Class of 1957. He also graduated from Catherman’s Business School in Cumberland, MD.

His career spanned over 40 years with First United Bank & Trust of Oakland, MD, where he began as an Assistant Manager in its office in Friendsville, MD. He continued his career at First United over the years, culminating with his tenure as President, CEO and Chairman of the Board. Dick loved and was devoted to the First United community and had a true passion for seeing it succeed.

He always said that the success of the bank was due to its people, all of whom he deeply respected and supported however he could. Dick lived in Garrett County most of his life and was also a part time resident of Bonita Springs, FL. He loved traveling, RVing, chopping wood, and spending time with his family.

He will always be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and loyal member of the Garrett County community. He was a member of the Oak Park Church of the Brethren and the Garrett County Historical Society. Surviving are his three daughters, Rebecca (Andrew) Battista, Towson, MD; Amy (Michael) Bednarcik, Ocean View, DE; and Laura (Luke) Maust, Forest Hill, MD; six grandchildren, Katie (Connor) Lynagh, New York, NY; Emily (Avery) Woods, New York, NY; Anne Marie Battista, Washington, DC; Patrick Battista, Towson, MD; Lucy Loughlin, Nottingham, MD; Molly Loughlin, Forest Hill, MD; and sister, Helen Stanton Dice of Bittinger, MD.

Dick had many loving cousins, nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, P.A., 179 Miller Street, Grantsville, MD, on Friday, October 26, from 4-7 pm. A Memorial Service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Saturday, October 27, at 11:00 am, immediately followed by interment at the Bittinger Cemetery for both Dick and Juanita, with the Rev.
