fulkersonsplentywood.com Bernice Jeanette (Johnson) Carter, 87, of Williston (formerly of Fortuna) passed into eternal rest and finally had the opportunity to meet her mother on January 25, 2019 at Sheridan Memorial Hospital after a short battle with cancer. She was the only child born to Alton & Elsie (Vogel) Johnson on August 24, 1931 on the Johnson family farm 5 miles north of Fortuna. Two days after her birth Bernice’s mother Elsie died from complications of her birth.

She was then raised by her father, her paternal grandfather and grandmother as well as her aunt Mona Haapalakso. She attended one room school just a mile south of the Johnson farm through the 8th grade. She graduated from Oak Grove Lutheran High School of Fargo, North Dakota in 1949 and was very proud to call it her alma mater attending many reunions over the years.

Bernice married Bland Carter on November 1, 1949 in Sidney, Montana meeting him through her cousin Mildred and Bland’s brother Lyle. She was active in the Lutheran Church. She assisted in school and Sunday school programs as well as her own children in various actives throughout their lives.

Her favorite things to do were gardening, her flower beds, caring for her yard and canning. But her speciality was her homemade bread and her devils food chocolate cake only to be served with Bland’s “cowboy coffee”. In recent years Bernice attended many Mondak Thunder sporting events with her oldest daughter Barbara and youngest daughter Beryl; State Girls Basketball 2013 tournament in Belgrade MT; Boys State Basketball 2016 tournament in Great Falls MT and the State Championship Football team in 2017, which Mom didn’t make it to due to the difficulty of travel at her age.

She was there in Grenora when the bus rolled back into town. District and Divisional tournaments were always the highlights for MOM shared with her daughters and son. Williston Lady Teton games became a favorite of Mom’s living only one block from the college and having granddaughter Sabrina on the team.

Bernice family cactus tradition is being carried on by daughter Beryl continuing the tradition of 100 plus years from the same plant. Preceding Bernice death were her husband of over 60 years Bland N. Carter; her parents Alton & Elsie Johnson; her in-laws Ray & Gertrude Carter and her great granddaughter EmmaLynn Rose Ling; six brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law; Bernice is survived by her daughters: Barbara Bohannon; Brenna (Dana) Panasuk all of Williston, ND; Betty (David) Petry of Minot, ND; Beryl Carter of Fargo, ND; and son Byron (Shelley) Carter of Fortuna, ND; 10 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren and anxiously waiting her 10th great grandchild to arrive in June 2019. She is also survived her brother-in-law Jimmy Carter of Rock Lake N.D; and Marilyn Carter of Cando, ND; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
