Dave Menge, pastor of Western Hills Christian Church officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, Oklahoma.
The family will greet friends Monday evening from 6pm until 7pm at the funeral home. Budd Vernon Hughes, 76, Lawton passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2019 in a Lawton hospital. He was born October 26, 1942 in Somers Point, New Jersey to George Wilden and Abigail (Carlson) Hughes.
Budd graduated from Ocean City High School, New Jersey in 1961. He joined the National Guard right out of high school and later went active duty, serving out of Fort Dix, New Jersey. He served in Germany for 8 years, was deployed during Desert Shield and later Desert Storm, was involved in the Liberation of Kuwait, as well as being deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Budd finished his time with the US Army in 1994, having earned the following awards; the Bronze Star Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon-2, Army Commendation Medal-5, NCO Professional Development Ribbon-2, Army Good Conduct Medal-5, Southwest Asia Medal-3 Service Stars, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Rifle (M-16) Expert, National Defense Service Medal-2, German Military Badge, Hand Grenade (Marksmanship), Driver Mechanic Badge, the Army Achievement Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. Following his time in the Army, Budd was a long haul truck driver and drove a school bus for Cache Schools. He enjoyed many things during his retirement, woodworking, OU Football, the Dallas Cowboys, OKC Thunder, NASCAR and Karaoke.
He loved watching his grandson’s bike races and calling his sister every Sunday. One thing he was very proud about was his Scottish and English ancestry, which was traced back to the lineage of Robert de Bruce, King of Scotland. Budd was a lifetime member of the VFW.
Survivors include his wife Sharon of the home, four children; Theresa Downing & husband Matt of Murrieta, California, John Robinson & wife Susan of Lawton, Sheri Hughes of Chico, California, Angela Cordes & husband Steven of Lawton, his sister Virginia Lemoine & husband George of Wilmington, Delaware, six grandchildren; Jason Sloan, Brittany Banks, Amber Lustig, Tyler Downing, Branden Cordes and Kye Cordes. He was also survived by his two great grandchildren Travis and Lily and his beloved dogs, Gus and Scooter. Budd was preceded in death by his parents and his father who raised him, Jimmy Jack.
