Byron W. Oldham, 92, residing in Sandusky, made yet one final journey Tuesday afternoon May 22, 2018, in Firelands Regional Medical Center. Byron W. Oldham was born January 25, 1926, at Fairmont, Nebraska to William W. and Effie C. (Davis) Oldham, descendants of two pioneer families. To family and friends he was best known as “Barney”.

He attended elementary school at Ithaca, Nebraska, high school at Hatch, New Mexico, and acquired his advanced education wherever an opportunity presented itself. He served with the Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. In 1945 Byron married Marcia Jean Hoffman of Nebraska City, Nebraska.

In 1947 their only child, William Byron, was born. Byron began his lifetime occupation as an engineer in 1946 with the Atomic Energy Commission at Los Alamos, New Mexico. There followed an interesting career that required the couple to relocate six times.

They returned to New Mexico in 1972 when Byron accepted a staff position with the University of California at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. In 1981 they retired to a home they owned in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Byron authored several books, most on the subject of history.

Restless in retirement, Byron took an engineer position at a nuclear power plant, and later was an engineer with the City of Nebraska City. The desire to be near their son and his family prompted a final move to Sandusky, Ohio in 2001. Lamentably, his son William passed away in 2005 and his beloved Marcia was called to God in January of 2012.

Byron was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church at Sandusky, Ohio. He was a Fifty-Year member of Western Masonic Lodge Number Two of Nebraska City and a charter member of the Lincoln-Omaha Chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America. “Barney” is survived by his loving daughter-in-law, Victoria Oldham and granddaughters, Christa Oldham and Cynthia Ducca.

Friends may visit on Saturday, May 26, 2018, from 10 A.M. until time of memorial services at 10:30 A.M. in Trinity Lutheran Church, 502 Bardshar Road, Sandusky. The Rev. Philip Gardner will be officiating.
