Herbert M. Buran, 80, residing in the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, passed away on Monday, May 14, 2018. He was born on July 6, 1937 in Iron River, Wisconsin. After high school, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Superior College in Wisconsin, and worked as a Launch Officer for the Space Shuttle Program.

He was a 20-year veteran of the United States Air Force, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Herbert was a member of the American Legion Post 421 in Fairview Park, serving as an officer. He always carried a tune, singing and whistling.

He also played trombone and loved music in general. He was “one of the good guys,” was extremely sociable and made friends wherever he went. His family also remembers him laughing uproariously to M*A*S*H on Monday nights.

Herbert is survived by his wife, Donna J. Bartelme, of Mentor-on-the-Lake, whom he married on July 25, 1995; children, Kristen (Stuart) Muladore, of Dewitt, MI, and Robert (Tanya) Buran, of Burlington Twp. , NJ; grandchildren, Connor, Taylor, Josh, Brooke, and Ian; siblings, Charlene, Charles, Robert, and Serena; and former wife, Madelyn Buran. In addition to his parents, Charles and Florence Buran; he was preceded in death by his brothers, “Buzz” and John.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22 until funeral services begin at 10 a.m. in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave. , Sandusky. Pastor Ryan Brown will officiate.

Burial will take place at 1 p.m. in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, OH. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Condolences may be shared with the family by visiting toftfuenralhome.com.
