Charles Gibbs, age 91, passed away Monday, May 14, 2018, at his residence. A native and lifelong resident of Yancey County, the Celo Valley, he was born July 12, 1926. He was preceded in death by his parents: Edward G. Gibbs and Lula Caroway Gibbs, his son: Darryl Lee Gibbs; and two brothers: Ray and Dail Gibbs.

He served in the U. S. Army, World War II, 1945 – 1946. Charles was a lifelong member of Browns Creek Baptist Church, where he served as a former assistant superintendent, teacher and Boy Scout leader. He retired from Glen Raven Mills in Burnsville in 1991 after 43 years as Manager of Production and Purchasing.

Charles was also a member of Burnsville Lodge #717 A.F. & A.M., and other Masonic bodies: Royal Arch & York Rites of Asheville and the Oasis Shrine Temple in Charlotte. He is survived by his wife: Marjorie Silver Gibbs; five sisters: Mildred Harris, Nell Huskins and Grace Simmons, all of Burnsville, Marie Johnson of Black Mountain and Nina Johnson of Marion. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A memorial service will be held at 1 PM, Saturday, May 26, 2018 in Browns Creek Baptist Church. Rev. Donald Davis will officiate.

The family will receive friends and a reception will also follow the memorial service. Burial will be in the Carroway Cemetery, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Yancey County, 856 Georges Fork Road, Burnsville, NC 28714.
