Obituary for Deacon Chuck D. Cantrell Deacon Chuck D. Cantrell, 69 of Grand Island died Friday, May 4, 2018 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Grand Island. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Celebrating Mass will be Bishop Joseph G. Hanefeldt as well as Priests and Deacons of the Omaha and Grand Island Diocese.
Following the Mass, military honors will be rendered by the United States Airforce and the United Veterans Honor Guard. Burial of the ashes will take place at a later date in the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell.
Visitation will be from 5-7 PM Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with a 7 PM Scripture Service. All Faiths Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements. Chuck was born March 6, 1949 at Arnold, NE, the son of Lewis and Winifred (Witthuhn) Cantrell.
He graduated from Hastings High School in 1967. He served in the U.S. Airforce from 1968-1972. Following his honorable discharge, he served in the Nebraska National Guard for over 10 years.
He married Joyce Steele on June 7, 1970. Later, he was united in marriage to Lisa Krance on February 23, 1991. Chuck was an electrical contractor, a paramedic during the time he owned Woodburn Ambulance Service and owned and operated G & C Enterprise.
Chuck was ordained as a Permanent Deacon on October 7, 2001 in the Archdiocese of Omaha. His assignments included St. Peter’s Parish in Fullerton, St. Peter and Paul’s Parish in St. Paul, and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and a retired member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).
Some of his enjoyments included hunting, carpentry, and socializing with family and friends. He served as a volunteer minister at St. Francis Medical Center. Chuck had a love of serving others, his country, and his family.
Memorials are suggested to the Veterans Administration Medical Center Hospice Unity, Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church or the Diocese of Grand Island. Survivors include his wife, Lisa; children, Shelbey (James) Spellman of Grand Island, Tyler (fiancé, Ashley) Cantrell of Lincoln, Lauren (fiancé, Colin) Cantrell of Grand Island and Michael Cantrell of Chicago; grandchildren, Preston, Sofia, Emmerson and Ryker and a brother, Bill (Shelly) Cantrell of Juniata, Nebraska. He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Judy.
