Esther Ruth (Wich) Berkey, 84, of Murrysville, passed away on Friday, October 5, 2018 at home, surrounded by her loving family. Born November 12, 1933 in Apollo, she was a daughter of the late Clair “Gus” Wich & Eleanor (Murphy) Wich. Esther lived in Apollo most of her life until marrying her husband, E. Robert Berkey, and moving to Murrysville, PA.

She attended Apollo Area High School, graduating in 1951. Esther was a member of Union Presbyterian Church, Murrysville, where she served… Read More » as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and sang in the choir. She was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Esther was a former member of the New Kensington chapter where she served as Worthy Matron, District Deputy, and several other offices. She is now a member of the Apollo Chapter No. 125.

After graduating, Esther worked for Alcoa in Pittsburgh before starting her family. She was the first paid employee of the Murrysville Library, and also worked in the Murrysville Tax Office. Esther was employed by Kraft Foods and retired in 1995.

A homemaker, she enjoyed working with her flowers, watching TV, working on crossword puzzles, reading, and baking. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Anna E. Mangus; and a brother, William G. Wick. Esther is survived by her husband, Bob Berkey; daughters, Ruth Ann Betancourt of North Apollo, Elinor Jane (John) Barry of Seaford, DE; granddaughters, Kristin & Erin Betancourt of North Apollo; half-brothers, Ronald and Herbert Wich; half-sisters, Linda Milcoff, Sherrie Sellers, Carla Bowers; sister-in-law, Carole Wick; brother-in-law, Robert “Spike” Mangus; and several nieces and nephews.

At Esther’s request, there will be no public viewing. A Memorial Service will be announced at Union Presbyterian Church, Murrysville, at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Curran-Shaffer Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Apollo, PA.
