CASTLEWOOD, VIRGINIA – Herman Hodges, 73, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2019 after a short illness. He was born in Avery County, North Carolina; son of the late George Edward and Grace Virginia Brown Hodges. He was preceded in death by one brother, Wade Hodges.

Herman loved teaching and working with young people. He was an inspiration and had many accomplishments during his career. He was a teacher at Castlewood High School for thirty-four years where he served in various positions: teacher of mathematics, physics, and computer science; president of the PTA; junior varsity football coach; varsity football statistician; coach of the academic team; and treasurer of the Band Boosters.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for fifty-two years where he served as deacon, choir director, Sunday school teacher, treasurer for twenty years, and participated in Christmas plays and Vacation Bible School. He served as treasurer of Scott County Regional Horse Association for seven years; treasurer of Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics; president of Southwest Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics; president of the Russell County Education Association, and teacher of mathematics for Southwest Virginia Community College. He is survived by his loving wife of almost fifty-two years, Jeweldine Hodges; one son, Eric Hodges and wife, Kathy of Weber City, Virginia; one daughter, Laura Minick and husband, Matt of Apex, North Carolina; one granddaughter, Emily Minick of Apex, North Carolina; two sisters, Barbara Gorman and husband, Joe of South Prince George, Virginia and Ruby Bowyer of Carson, Virginia; several loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Herman Hodges will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 10, 2019 in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel, Castlewood, Virginia with Rev. Leonard Ferguson and Rev. Rick Gibson officiating.

Interment will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Eric Hodges, Matt Minick, Roy Castle, Jess Hackney, Brandon Helbert, Rick Gibson, Jim Pratt, and Freddie Wallace. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Over the Hill Gang.
