Jens was always fond to say, Ella’s midwife traveled a mile and a half by horse and sleigh to help deliver him. Jens attended Garfield school a mile from home for eight years, during the summer he attended four weeks of Danish school at Garfield, and graduated salutatorian of his Antelope High School class in 1944. Jens was drafted into the army and spent nine months in Korea.
The voyage back from Korea was a long twenty days on the pacific and they docked in San Francisco. Following two years of service to his country Jens returned to the farm. At Christmas time he met Mayme Rorvig and on July 2, 1947 they were married at Nathanael Lutheran Church.
Jens and Mayme farmed and Jens drove the Anteloope School bus for 17 years and they raised three children. Jens was chosen Sheridan County Conservation Farmer of the year in 1979. One of the many duties on the farm is picking rocks.
The only rock picker Jens had was Mayme. Mayme said that Jens would get after her and say “that one’s too SMALL”. He took up photography and perfected that skill quite proficiently.
With Hans Larsen flying, Jens took aerial photographs of the farmsteads that were selected Farm of the Year then framed and donated them to the Soil Conservation office. He was also very interested in history and aided in creation of historical books for Sheridan County, especially Dagmar and the Nathanael Lutheran history. Jens lost Mayme to Hodgkins disease in 1991; and although life seemed to stop for a while, it moved on for Jens.
With a job well done on the farm he moved to Plentywood and met Gertrude Egeland; they were married June 19, 1993 and celebrated their 25th anniversary this past summer. Jens had a God given gift for building. He constructed an addition on their house and also built a garage.
They moved to the Pioneer Manor and from there to LaCasa for three years. With Jens’ deteriorating health he was admitted to the nursing home December 24, 2018 and with Jesus invitation, “Jens, it is time to come home” he peacefully passed away January 12, 2019.
