He passed away January 21, 2019 at the Valley View Home in Glasgow, MT. Military services were held January 28, 2019 at the Scobey Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul Landeraaen officiating.

Waller Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements and burial was in the Daniels County Cemetery, Scobey. When Jim was six months old, his parents divorced. He spent much of his young life living with his grandparents, Jim and Phoebe Collins where he learned his passion in life, farming and raising livestock.

Jim also spent a lot of time in Peerless with the Chet and Lillian Baldry family, who he always considered a second family. At age 8 a neighbor, Eric Vold, gave Jim a paint pony he named Pal and he and his new friend were able to travel all around the country north of Four Buttes. It was then he discovered his enjoyment of horses and owned many through his life time.

Jim was known for his ability as a teamster and broke and sold many teams. On October 16, 1952 Jim enlisted in the US Army and was later stationed in Korea. During his time there he earned several distinctions including the Korean Service Medal W/1 Bronze Service Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

He received his honorable discharge April 30, 1954 with the rank of Sgt. Jim returned home and worked around the country as a farm worker. After a few years working for Tony Kleeman he found himself on the North Bench north of Glentana working for Clinton Nelson and that was when the neighbor girl caught his eye.

Jim and Shirley Seifert were married on October 2, 1956. The newlyweds continued as farm laborers for awhile and in 1957 their first son, Edward was born. Shortly after they moved to a half section of land north of Peerless that his Grandpa Jim had given them as a wedding present, and that was the beginning of their farming career together.

Soon two more sons were added to the family Randy in 1959 and Lynn in 1960. Although a conservative man, Jim expanded his operation and moved the family north of Richland on the Canadian border in 1962, and two more children were born, Perry in 1963 and Linda in 1964. In 1968 Jim and Shirley bought the farm from his Grandpa Jim and Grandma Phoebe and moved his family north of Four Buttes where he farmed and raised livestock until retirement in 2001 when he and Shirley moved into Scobey.

The couple were active 4H leaders and strong supporters of FFA, and Jim enjoyed chaperoning numerous events including taking a group of FFA members to the National Convention in Kansas City. He was especially proud of the numerous Grand and Reserve Champion Steers and Hogs that his kids and grandkids showed at the Fair over the years. Jim enjoyed this retirement by taking his grandchildren on the wagon train every summer and spending time with his teams of horses that he had used to feed his cows right up until retirement, and then used them in parades and on the wagon train.

Declining health forced him to move into the Valley View Nursing Home in 2017 where he lived until his time of passing. Jim is survived by his wife Shirley of 62 years. Sons Ed (Debbie) of the family farm, Randy (Susan) of Yelm, Washington, Perry (Lori) of LaPorte, Indiana and daughter Linda (Al) McCormick of Billings.

Also grandchildren Shalece Dobson, Shyla, Shasta and Jace Hinton, Cody and Kelsey Hinton, Justin Perkins and Kyle, Ty and Amanda McCormick as well as three great grandchildren, half siblings Bill Andersen of Scobey, Tom Anderson (Loretta) of Malta, Iris Pehan, Spokane, Washington, Dora (Curt) Larson of Sedona, Arizona and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his grandparents, mother Vera Anderson Walter, sister Mae Hames, son Lynn Hinton and half-brother Loren Andersen.
