fulkersonsplentywood.com Gordon G. Garrick, 89, formerly of Outlook and Plentywood, passed away on January 26, 2019 at his residence, Highgate Assisted Living, with Peace Hospice in place. Gordon was born in Outlook, Mt. to Lyle (Shavey) and Ann Garrick on July 16, 1929.
He was second born in the family of eleven brothers and two sisters. When he was asked how they lived with so many in his family, he would reply,” It was just kids raising kids and we loved it”. While a senior in high school he went to work on a farm for Charles and Irma Edwards of Whitetail, Mt.
It was there he met the love of his life Frances Edwards. Gordon was in the Army and served in Korea and love letters were sent back and forth between the two. When he returned to Montana after serving, he approached Charles Edwards and asked for his daughter, Frances’ hand in marriage.
Gordon and Frances married in 1953 and Gordon applied for the Postmaster position in Outlook and was appointed Postmaster, also in 1953. Gordon and Frances had two children, Lyndon (Lorna) Garrick and Leann (Tom) Shuman. They built a very nice home in Outlook and raised their children as “Outlook Bluejays”.
Gordon loved music and was very talented. He played many instruments and sang. The children have many fond memories of going to bed at night with him singing and playing his piano.
Gordon had several dance bands and on the weekend he would play for dances throughout Eastern Montana. His son, Lyndon became their drummer in his high school years. Gordon’s brothers were all very talented musicians and when they all came back to Outlook on holidays they had “Jam Sessions,” which were a lot of fun for the whole family.
Gordon retired from the postal service after serving for 4 7 years, then they sold their home in Outlook and moved to Plentywood to be closer to healthcare. As their health declined they moved to an assisted living home in Great Falls, Mt. to be close to their daughter, Leann, who lives and works there.
Frances lost her battle with brain cancer on May 14, 2018 and Gordon continued to make his home in Great Falls at Highgate. Gordon was a kind and gentle soul who will truly be missed. He was preceded in death by his wife Frances of 60 years, his Mother, Father, and seven brothers.
He is now playing his piano in heaven, with Frances by his side listening.
