(Stokes) Velez “Loving Mother, Daughter, Sister & Aunt” Lisa (Stokes) Velez, 55 of Waterbury, entered into the gates of heaven after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, February 17, 2019 at St. Mary’s Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Lisa was born in Waterbury, CT on February 26, 1963 and she was the daughter of Barbara Stokes and the late Donald Ward Stokes, Sr She was a longtime communicant of St. Joseph’s Church and served on the Board of Directors for the Lithuanian Club, the Board of Trustees for the Lithuanian Cemetery Association was an active member of the Knight of Lithuania and the Lithuanian Club of Waterbury.
Lisa loved her neighborhood, Brooklyn, and served as the President of the Waterbury Neighborhood Council and the Brooklyn Neighborhood Association. She worked tirelessly on behalf of her beloved city of Waterbury. As a matter of fact, in recognition of her hard work, the city honored her with the title of Waterbury Lithuanian Mayor of the day; a true honor for her.
She also received in 2018 the United States Attorney’s Award for citizenship engagement and supporting community policing. In addition to all of her accomplishments and supporting her community, Lisa enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and had a love for dancing, singing karaoke and playing setback. She was a member of the V.F.W. Post 7790 Ladies Auxiliary.
Besides her mother Barbara, Lisa leaves behind to cherish her memory her fiancé, Vytautas Jankauskas and her three children; Crystal Velez, Christopher Velez and Leanna Velez. She also leaves behind her siblings; Donald W. Stokes, Jr. and his wife Cathy, Kenneth Stokes, Robert Stokes and his wife Susan, Kevin Stokes and his wife Lisa, William Stokes and his wife Georgann, Michael Stokes and his wife Catherine, Christopher Stokes and his wife Becky, her uncle William Dubauskas and his wife Jean as well as over twenty nieces and nephews. Lisa’s family would like to thank the team at Smilow Cancer Hospital, especially her surgeon Dr. James E. Clune M.D. and physician assistant Carla Becerra, PA-C as well as the doctors and nurses at VITAS at St. Mary’s Hospital, especially Lori and Kara and Rev.
Norman Brockett. Arrangements: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 21, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, Waterbury. Everyone is kindly asked to meet directly at the church.
Burial will follow at Lithuanian Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday evening from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Chase Parkway Memorial, The Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury.
