Obituary of Maurice Roach Maurice E. Roach, 91, formerly of 434 West Ave. , Falconer passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on his 91st Birthday on Tuesday (January 15, 2019) in the Lutheran Home. A lifelong area resident he was born January 15, 1928 in Jamestown, the son of the late Walter and Jesse Brundell Roach.

Maurice was a 1946 graduate of Falconer High School and began his printing career at the age of 16, learning the trade from Harry C. Mills in 1944. They formed a partnership in 1947 and upon Mr. Mills death in 1952, Maurice became sole owner of the firm. He served as vice president of Kenneth W. Fosburg Company from 1976 to 1988 when the firm was merged into Falconer Printing & Design Inc. Maurice owned and operated Falconer Printing and Design, Inc. for 50 years and turned the business over to his sons, Stephen and James Roach.

He was a member of the Selective Service Board # 92 during the Korean and Vietnam Wars and served until the time the Selective Service System ceased operation. Maurice was chairman of the Falconer School Building Committee in 1956 during the high school addition, Ellington and Kennedy grade schools were built. He assisted then Supervising Principal Gregory Benson with the planning of the South Side School Gym all-purpose room.

He was a charter member and charter secretary of the Falconer Lions Club and served as president in 1956-57. Maurice served on the Falconer Public Library Board from 1965 to 1982 and was chairman of the Falconer Planning Board under Mayor Dye from 1976 to 1980. He served as a trustee for the Village of Falconer and was Deputy Mayor for 12 years under Mayor Schrader and Mayor Mattison from 1982 to 1995.

Maurice also served on the Falconer Beautification Committee and was one of the originators’ of Falconer Realty Corp, having served as secretary treasurer. Maurice was active for many years in the Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce. He served on the business development committee, which was instrumental in the building of the Flakeboard Plant in Frewsburg which became Keywell-Vac Air, and purchasing the land to develop the Truck-Lite Plant in Falconer.

He was currently a member of the Zion Covenant Church and served as an usher and was a member of the Stewardship Committee. Maurice was instrumental and founder of the Falconer Region Community Fund along with the Chautauqua Regional Community Foundation. In earlier years Maurice played municipality class B baseball in the 1940’s.

He bowled for 50 years in the Falconer Business Men’s League and served as Little League Baseball Coach in 1964. He is survived by his four children: Patricia (Steven) Sandberg of Jamestown, Stephen (Linda) Roach Sr. of Fredonia, Susan (James) Vincent of Jamestown, James (Judith) Roach of Mayville; eleven grandchildren: Erick (Cammy) Sandberg of Jamestown, Nathan (Geraldine) Sandberg of Portland, OR, Benjamin Sandberg of Buffalo, Kimberly (Michael) Myles of Jamestown, Stephen (Candra) Roach Jr. of Jamestown, Ashley Willoughby of Charlotte, NC, Daniel (Molly) Vincent of Cleveland, OH, Kevin Vincent of Long Island, NY, Amy (Kevin) Towle of Queens, NY, Allyson Roach of Orchard Park, Erin Roach (Ryan Dustin) of Falconer; ten great grandchildren and a brother Robert (Mildred) Roach of Jamestown. He was preceded in death by his wife Doris Lyon Roach whom he married March 26, 1949 in Levant Wesleyan Church, who died August 5, 2017; a granddaughter Kristina M. Roach on January 18, 2016 and a sister Elizabeth R. Olofson on September 3, 2008.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday in the Christ Chapel of Lutheran, 715 Falconer St., Jamestown. Rev. Rick Miller pastor of Zion Covenant Church will officiate.

Rev. Daniel S. Rumfelt chaplain of Lutheran and Rev. Tara Lamont Eastman of Tree of Life Lutheran Church will assist.

Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Falconer. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday in the Falconer Funeral Home and one hour prior to the funeral service Saturday at Christ Chapel of Lutheran. In lieu of flowers memorials may be donated to the Falconer Region Community Fund c/o Chautauqua Regional Community Foundation, 418 Spring St., Jamestown, NY 14701; Zion Covenant Church, 520 Fairmount Ave.
