Nola Marie Huss, 74, passed away on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at Marian Hospital in Santa Maria, CA. There will be a celebration of her life on Saturday, April 14 at 1:00 p.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Orcutt, CA. Nola was born on June 22, 1943 in Fairbury, NE to Zellamae and Russell I. Huss, and was big sis to her brothers, Russell (deceased) and Mark.

Nola received her diploma in Nursing at Lutheran Medical Center in St. Louis, MO and married Richard John Unger in Charleston, SC… Read More » in 1976. She gave birth to her only child, Dana Marie Vargas (nee Unger) on January 16, 1978 in Charleston SC, whom she is survived by. She became a certified Nurse Practitioner of Critical Care & Trauma at the Medical University of SC, received her Masters of Science in Nursing from USM, & became a certified in wound & ostomy management at the Cleveland Clinic.

She developed childbirth education programs for the Icelandic Maternal Health Program and was Clinical Nurse Manager for Pope John Paul II’s medical team for his Mariana Islands visit in 1981. She worked for Homelife Health Care in VA, Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice in ME, and HomeHealth Visiting Nurses of Southern Maine until she retired in 2012. She remained the leader of the Monhegan Hiking & Temperance Society up until her death.

She moved to Santa Maria in 2012 to be closer to her daughter and found fulfillment in her volunteer work for the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society, as a Recording Secretary & Evangelism committee Chair for Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, and as classroom aide for the 4th grade class at Oak Valley Elementary School. Nola retained her razor sharp wit and humor to the end, and those who knew her, knew of her love of Jeopardy! , travel, NPR, her Church, classical music, and a good gin martini.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society and ReconcilingWorks.org.
