Obituary for Philip E. Hammon Philip Hammon, 96, of Grand Island, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, April 12, 2018. A memorial service and celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at All Faiths Funeral Home, Grand Island, NE, with lunch following. Philip was born April 2, 1922 at Kennebec, SD to Frank E. and Elizabeth Bell (Wellman) Hammon.
Philip grew up and attended school in the Lynch, Nebraska area. He entered the US Army Air Corp on October 1, 1942 and served during WWII as Staff Sargent and Crew Chief. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, he was on an airplane above Normandy helping paratroopers jump behind enemy lines.
He was honorably discharged September 29, 1945 and honored to be a part of the 2012 Hall County Hero Flight. On September 11, 1946, Philip was united in marriage to Opal Lorraine Johns in O’Neill, NE. They made their home in Oregon and California before returning to farm in Boyd County Nebraska.
Their final move was to Grand Island, NE July 1967 when he went to work at New Holland. After 17 years, he retired in 1984. Philip’s faith was the cornerstone of his life and he looked forward to being united with his wife, family and friends that preceded him.
He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. Witty and quick with a retort, he enjoyed bantering with his morning coffee group at the 2nd Street McDonalds. His family meant everything to him and his smile was the biggest when he was interacting with his grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Those left to cherish his memory include a son, Paul (Kay) Hammon and daughters, Susan (Lloyd) Rolo and Diane (Bob) Brewer, all of Grand Island; seven grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and three step great-great grandchildren; brothers, Donald Hammon of Parma, ID, and Duane (Mary) Hammon of Great Bend, KS; sister-in-law, Grace (Ed) Hammon of Ontario, OR, and numerous nieces, nephews and many great friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife in 2009; his parents and twelve brothers and sisters. Memorials are suggested to Lutheran Bible Translators or Meals on Wheels.
